NCAA Tournament Seeding

Post by MSU01 » Thu Mar 09, 2023 7:51 am

Here's a list of the current 13-16 seeds in ESPN's Bracketology sorted by their NCAA Net ranking which the committee uses as part of their seeding protocols. Teams with an asterisk have clinched, otherwise the #1 seed in the conference tournament is listed. Looks like MSU is safely a 15 and may well end up a 14 with an upset or two in the ongoing tournaments. Will keep this updated as more of the outstanding tournaments finish.

(13) Iona 63
(13) Yale 64
(13) Utah Valley 74
(13) Toledo 79
(14) Furman* 88

Where are they most likely sent to play their first game? Denver or Sacramento are big possibilities, if they aren't put into the Rd1 play-in's in Dayton, OH

I think we are better than a 16 and not good enough for an 11 and those are the play in games. Going back 2nd year in a row I think helps

There's virtually no chance of MSU being sent to Dayton for the first four given their relatively good record and computer rankings compared to some of the other automatic qualifiers. I agree that Denver or Sacramento are the most likely locations, as it seems like a good chance of MSU drawing a Big 12 or Pac-12 opponent who would be likely sent to those two sites.

Would love to see a Pac12 team, in more recent times they seem to be soft in the middle, which plays to MSU's size advantage in the post. Big 12 would be a bad draw (as TTU was last season), that conference was stacked this season with a ton of physical and really good teams, which would neutralize the size/physicality advantage of the Cats. Ok. St. bludgeoned Oklahoma last night... Not that we'd see them, as they'll likely end up in Dayton as one of the last four in. Just used them as an example.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Here's a pretty cool site I found that compiles a bunch of different bracket projections together. Virtually everyone has MSU as a 15 seed at the moment.

It's weird because this year's team is rated a fair bit higher in the analytics than last year's squad that received a 14 seed. I figured we'd be a 14 or a 13 but it looks like we're a lock for a 15 which puts us up against UCLA, Texas, Baylor, AZ or maybe Gonzaga. Basically it doesn't make that big of a difference - what we need to do this year is compete.

I was at the MSU - Arizona game in Tucson and we only trailed the Wildcats by 7 on their home floor at halftime before they pulled away in the second half and won by 20+.

In that game Jubrile was very competitive against their bigs. I think that's going to be the key matchup with whoever we face. Can Jubrile and Great hang tough in the middle w. the opponents size. After that we can match athletic wing (Raequan) and I'm confident that our guards will compete with most backcourts.

Play-in won’t happen barring the parameters for seeding those games dramatically changes. Wouldn’t mind it though because I think MSU would win that game easily and it counts as an NCAA Tournament win.

I agree that I don't think our guys will be intimidated in the least given the schedule we have played. And did you watch just how intense and relentless our guys guarded against Weber and NAU? If we can continue that kind of intensity on defense and the refs are competent, I think we can be very competitive.

The mocks I have seen show MSU a 15 in Denver. They will need to get some off ball action going for this game. They won’t be able to dump it down low and let the bigs back down the other player. They are going to have to run weak side action to free up some shooters or it could be a long day for MSU.

Just so we don't run into somebody that has big long guards and 5 athletic starters like Texas Tech had. Our ability to compete will be determined by the kind of team we face. We match up better with the physical teams rather than the ultra athletic ones.

I saw Texas is one of the mocks. 2 vs. 15

The path to the 14 begins today at 1p MT on ESPN+. We need UC Irving to get knocked out of the Big West tournament. It would help if that whole bracket turned ugly. Quarterfinals are today.

it's going to be a tough draw not matter who we get. IMO Gonzaga would be our best chance at a win, they have a pretty we known Achilles heel. You just out physical them, gris did a pretty good job of that in Spokane even.

After last year, I still have nightmares about playing teams from Texas in the first round!

On that note, I'm actually hoping for Baylor in a 3-14. They haven't been too sharp of late.

Here's an update as of Saturday morning, again using the 13 - 16 seeds in the ESPN Bracketology and sorted by NET rankings. MSU seems to be right on the line between a 14 and 15, not that it probably matters too much which they get as the projected 3 seeds don't exactly look like a walk in the park compared to the 2s. A Yale loss in the Ivy League tourney would help - the Big West and WAC have both had upsets, but their remaining teams are still very good and ranked right around where MSU is. Iona still needs to win their championship game but is playing the #11 seed Marist in the championship, so an upset seems unlikely there.

13 Iona (59)
13 Yale (64)
13 Toledo (77)
13 Furman (88)
14 Louisiana (89)
14 Colgate (101)
14 UCSB (102)
14 MSU (104)
15 Southern Utah (105)
15 Vermont (111)
15 Kennesaw (114)
15 UNC-Asheville (140)
16 NKU (155)
16 Grambling (170)
16 TAMU-CC (177)
16 Howard (216)
16 SEMO (242)
16 FDU (300)
