NIL - Men's Basketball

Post by mensbbNIL » Wed Feb 01, 2023 7:00 pm

Hello Bobcat basketball fans this is Mark Durham....will be a bit of a ramble, but I hope it all comes together and makes sense at the end....I want to introduce myself and give you a little background on the NIL for men’s basketball....first off, I’ve been a bobcat fan since 1965...in my family you were born a cat fan.....my dad, brother, nephew, and daughter all played hoops for MSU and I have been around basketball my entire life....I played and coached at Western in Dillon and the only college teams I cheer for are the Bobcats, Bulldogs and any team that is playing the griz...let’s move on to what the NIL is all about and why I am volunteering for this cause.....I love bobcat athletics....I’ve known Danny since he was in high school as I took him with me on my “MT Hoops” All-Star teams to AZ and CA to compete in Summer tournaments and he played for my bro....also, God gave me the gift of gab and I’m not afraid to ask for money...ha...and I’m a board member on the 6th man club and we want to make sure we are working together and not competing for the same money....at the end of the day any money raised for either group is great as it all benefits men’s basketball....but, at this point money cannot be exchanged back and forth from 6th man to NIL so for now we will move on with what we can do and get full disclosure out to all our donors and fans....sidenote - Dick Bratton is leading the charge for the women’s basketball NIL so we have them covered and I wanted to make sure that was said as we have plenty of women’s fans on this site as well.....Brandon Vancleeve started the NIL with football and I am going to cut and paste from his thread a few months ago as it will answer a few questions you may have......I don’t necessarily think NIL is a good idea, but for now we need to have it so we can continue to have the success our teams are having and our goal is to have the best NIL in the FCS in all our sports.......I’m sure you have read about some of the money some of the athletes are earning - stupid in my opinion, but if we can help our athletes with living costs and opportunities to earn other money then it will be worth it.....if you have any questions you can text, call, or email me any time.... 406.925.1981 or markdurham1983@gmail.com.... to check out the website go to https://bobcatcollective.com

Sorry for all of the above grammatical errors....pretty sure I didn't get an 'A' in English at Three Forks High School!!

Couple quick answers to some of the questions coming out.

1) Management Firm Costs: Blueprints sports will take 10% of all contracts provided to the players. In our research prior to committing to a partnership with Blueprint, we found that to be around the industry average. For the services they are providing (marketing, PR, website management, contract management, compliance reporting, tax management, etc.), we felt like that was worth it and really the only way to be able to pull this off in a cohesive, efficient manner. As far as the Bobcat Collective side, we do not hold back any of the funds, putting 100% of the funds collected, into the fund. This page on their site provides a lot of detail on the services they provide. (https://blueprintsports.com/powered-by/)

2) How will the funds be distributed: Our goal is to provide every player with a NIL contract. That is important to our mission as we feel combatting the cost of living challenges in Bozeman is the most beneficial thing we can do for these athletes. As mentioned, we want to include everyone, but not every contract will be identical. We will have measuring factors that will determine how we differentiate the distribution across all of the players.

3) Will other sports be included?: We hope to include all other sports that are interested in joining us. Contributors will be able to go to our main website, and choose which program(s) they wish to contribute to.

4) Is this affiliated with the University?: No, it is not connected to the University, at all. We have met with administration, compliance, coaching staff and players to inform them of our Collective, but past that, they will not have any involvement in our collective, nor can they.

I already donate monthly to the collective. I originally set up my contribution to the football team since they were the only team in the collective. Is that money pooled for all athletes or do I have to go in again and specify a new donation for basketball?

Also a good time to mention the initiative we are doing with Kola Bad Bear for the "No More Stolen Sisters" game on Feb 11th. In partnership with The NIL Shop, Kola created 4 different designs in support of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous People organization at Montana State (Kola is co-chair). Kola will be donating the proceeds of this initiative to the club. Amazing project from one of our amazing student athletes! Orders can be made through February 6th to receive your gear before the game.

Here is the link to the collection:

This is the 40th athlete we have created a merchandise line for. You can see all of our athlete collections here:

If you checked football that is where it is going. All our sports are listed in the "drop down" menu on the donation page on bobcatcollective.com. You would have to go in and do men's basketball also.

Thank you Mark for leading this effort! For those who didn’t attend men’s BB send off Coach Logie felt he needed somewhere between $75-125k in NIL monies to help him be competitive with recruiting. Sorry if I misquoted that Mark but that’s what I took away.

I gotta admit him deciding to stay is making me want to “put up” rather than “shut up”. So even though I can’t write the big check I’ll give my pittance to help both Coach Logie snd Coach Bin.

I understand the sentiment of splitting up NIL to support the programs individually. But why can’t all donations go to a central “pot” and then money gets allocated to each program based on some system of merit or something like that? Like I said, I get why but also, MSU is a football school and will probably always be a football school. Let’s use that as the backbone to support all programs and not just have football take all the spoils.
If I were in the financial position to donate (currently in grad school) I still wouldn’t like the idea of having to donate to football, volleyball, basketball, etc. I like the idea of donating once to the school and having the money split accordingly.

Like you said, it's a football school first and foremost. There's a mix of football donors and MSU athletics donors and the football guys probably wouldn't like their money being spent outside of football.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

Working on taxes and just thought of a question. Is a NIL contribution tax deductible?

I haven’t filed 2023 year. Have until April 15. You are allowed to make an IRA contribution until April 15 and apply towards the previous year, 2023. Just wondering if that is available for a NIL contribution today?
