Former Cat hoops player was killed fighting fires yesterday. Small solace knowing he was doing what he loved to do.

Played for Mick in the early 2000’s.

Thoughts and prayers to his family. Way too young.

I got to know Tom a little bit back in college. He was just a really genuinely nice guy. Very sad to hear this news.

Great guy! Very religious.

He got screwed that year the Big Sky decided to go Friday-Saturday instead of Thursday-Saturday as his religion kept him from doing anything sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. He got to play like half the games.

He'll be missed for sure.

Prayers to his wife and kids. Awful deal.

Heartbreaking. Here's the AP story that just came across the wire:
A Montana man who died when the helicopter he was piloting crashed while fighting an Oregon wildfire was a former basketball player at Montana State University, authorities said Wednesday.

Tom Duffy of Bozeman, Montana, died in Monday's crash in the Mount Hood National Forest while he was helping fight the White River Fire. Duffy had been making water drops on the fire for several days, fire officials said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of crash.

Duffy played basketball at Montana State University from 2000-2002 while observing his Seventh-day Adventist faith, which prevented him from participating in basketball activities from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

"If I stand up for God, he'll continue to bless me," Duffy told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle in February 2001.

Duffy's identification was unveiled in news releases Wednesday from Montana U.S. Sen. Steve Daines and Montana Gov. Steve Bullock.

"Tom's dedication to protecting lives from the devastation of fires led him to lend his skills as a pilot to our neighbors in Oregon," Bullock said in a statement. "His spirit of service and bravery represents the best of Montana."

Duffy, 40, is survived by his wife, Robyn, and their three children, according to GleanerNow, a publication of the Adventist Church in the Pacific Northwest.

Great article about Tom's basketball journey.

At the end of the article is an embedded video of his memorial service. The photo montage near the end will help you fulfill your Jimmy Valvano checklist today (1. spend a little time in thought each day 2. laugh each day 3. have your emotions moved to tears each day.....that's a full day, that's a helluva day)

Didn't know Tom, but from that photo montage, he lived a helluva life. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, 3 kids and all his friends/family.
