I think it mostly comes from Bozeman and MSU being mentioned in many publications as the best of the west and Missoula only be known as that place they make the vegatable oil!

I remember when I was in college and the Cats were good in Basketball and the Griz were in the middle of the streak in football. Since I was a dumb 19 year old, I talked a lot of trash because I thought I deserved to, as if I had anything to do with it. Anyway, I talked trash to Griz fans about the basketball team and all anybody ever said was "come on, nobody cares about basketball!" I knew they were right, but I needed to hold onto something.
