I am following as many of our men's and Women's basketball commits - soon to be signees - once again this winter. The high school season is still a month away but this weekend the JC basketball season kicked off with a few tournaments here is what I have to report.

Jubrile Belo 6-9 PF Last year Belo came off the bench as Lamar's back-up center. This year he is starting at the power Forward spot. Lamar went 0-2 this weekend playing in a Kansas JC Tourney. In the first game against Barton he scored 13 points pulled down 7 rebounds had 2 assists and a block. He shot 50% from the field and went 9-11 from the foul line in 30 minutes of playing time. The second game yesterday against Seward County JC he scored 6 points pulled down 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.

Mychael Paulo 6-4 sg/pg This is Paulo second year starting at the shooting guard spot. Paulo helped Williston State to 2 wins this weekend in the Mon-Dak preseason tourney and will be playing for the championship later today. In the first game against Williston beat Lake Region State 84-58. Paulo scored 13 points pulled down 3 rebounds, dished 5 assists, had 3 steals and a block. He shot 50% from the field & 43% from 3 point range, in 28 minutes of PT. The second game Williston St. came away with a 97-76 win against Dawson CC. No box score is available yet for that game.

I like the sound of that, especially the underlined.

I have been a little lazy in my updating of MSU basketball recruits so I thought I might give it a go starting with 6-9 center Jubrile Belo.

Belo plays for Lamar JC and originally hales from England . Coach Haslam has known and recruited the guy for some time. If you remember when he was signed they never really talked about his stats. His first year at Lamar he averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds before going down 7 games into the season with a leg injury, that kept him out the rest of the season. This summer he played very well at the various JUCO recruiting events as he returned from the injury and got a lot stronger. He had about 10-15 schools looking at him, including former Bobcat Danny Sprinkle at CSF, by the end of the summer and going into the fall. Most of the schools wanted to wait and scout him this season, being a little nervousness about his stat line and past injury. Only two schools Montana State and Indiana State offered him this past fall. He visited both schools before committing and signing with Montana State this past November. In about October the NCAA & NJCAA granted him another year of eligibility due to his injury in 2017-18, so this current year is considered his freshman year and will have 3 years of eligibility for the Bobcats. Lamar started off the year with 4 strait looses in a Kansas JC tournament. Kansan, historically is one of if not the strongest JC competition in the USA. After these four games Belo was averaging about 7-8 pts a game and 6 rebounds (actually not bad for a Big Sky Big man recruit). Since then Lamar and Belo has been making some waves. Lamar is now 11-6 going into conference play and Belo is currently averaging a double double with 16.1 points a game and 10.2 rebounds 2.5 blocks a game while shooting 62% from the field and 76% (on 112 attempts) from the free throw line. As you can see from his free throw attempts he also knows how to draw a foul. Belo last game scored 29 points (13-18 shooting) and collected 15 rebounds. Bello's best game so far this season was a 34 and 16 rebound game in December. What makes his average more impressive is that Lamar has played a couple cupcakes this season. Games in which Belo played only 10-15 minute and collected single digit points and rebounds. He has a nice mid range shot but does not wander to three point line to take shots. A few weeks ago the folks at Jucorecruiting.com mentioned as being one of the top 5 true low post big men in the JC D-1 ranks this year. Since then they have also called Belo one of the surprises of the season so far. Last week Jucorecruiting.com came out with their top 100 recruiting prospects in the country and Belo was listed at #61. He was the only Big Sky 2019 recruit (so far) to make the list. He also was one of only a handful (OK two handfuls) of JC Freshman to make the list. I really think the coaches got a real steal here and could definitely make a big impact on next years team. The real question will be how well can our other young post, Devin Kirby, and him play together.

It seems I see something great about Jubrile each time I log into twitter. Looking forward to seeing him as a Cat.

Now a women's Player

Darian White is a 5-6 (that may be generous) PG/SG from Mountain View High school in/near Boise Idaho. Mountain View is and has been the #1 %A team in Idaho since the season started and are currently undefeated this year. There margin of victory right now is pretty close to 20 points a game. They have played the #2 Ranked team a half dozen times this season so far. It seems as soon as a team reaches the #2 rank they play Mountain View and they are not any more. They are also the first Idaho girls team (any class) to cinched a top seed in the Idaho play-offs. White is the best player on a loaded team and plays both point guard (the position she will most likely play for the Bobcats) and shooting guard. She is averaging 15.8 (#3 in state) points 4.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 3.6 steals (#1 in state) a game according to both Max Prep and Idaho Press. What makes those stats even more impressive is that White is not playing much, if at all in the 4th quarter due to the leads they get. As you might guess White is the best player on her team, but they have quite a few other players getting College recruiting attention. I am told a 6-3 junior who could get D-1/Big Sky attention next year, but their 6-1 freshman Naya Ojukwu (14pts, 8 rebs 2 blocks) is almost ready to play in the Big Sky right now and is getting Pac-12 attention. White's story. White is a TOUGH player who has been through a lot in her short life (see article below) and she brings that to her game. She is a scorer who can hit the three or drive the lane. I really think she is going to make an instant impact on the Bobcats. Not sure she will start (although she could challenge) but she has the talent and is at the right spot to contribute.

What does it look like when a D-1 recruit plays in a run-of-the-mill Class C game? It's not very fair sometimes.

Men's Signee Mychael Paulo update

Mychael Paulo is a 6-3 PG/SG from Williston State JC in North Dakota. He is originally from Ontario Canada. He had an very good freshman year surprising quite a few folks by averaging 15.4 points 3.4 rebounds 1.9 assists while shooting 48% from the field and 38.1% from 3 point range playing primarily the shooting guard spot. This year Wiliston has added some more fire power and Paulo's stats are down some averaging 12.7 points, 2,8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and shooting 40.5% from the field, and 27.5% from three point range. This year Paulo has been asked to play the point guard spot quite a bit which may account for his stats drop. Wiliston also added a 6-7 shooting guard/small forward soph transfer Devane Johnson (avg 14.1 pts) and 6-3 freshman shooting guard James Jones (avg 18.6) a game out of Chicago. I have heard the Bobcats have shown an interest in both of Paola teammates but are the most interested in Jones who is a freshman qualifier and could sign this spring and have 3 year eligibility. About a month ago Paulo was named player of the week as he averaged 22 points and 4 assists over tow games. Then you have this weekend where Wiliston played Dawson CC and Miles CC where he totaled 6 points and 8 assists in the two games. In the Bozeman Chronicle when he committed Paulo was quoted as saying, (paraphrasing) "The MSU coach recruited me as a scorer, some who could come in and help take up the slack next year when Hall leaves" Paulo should be a good player for us but I don't see him quite on the same level as Ricketts was when we signed him. He will give us options at both the shooting guard and point guard spots where he will score the ball some, but he will be a huge factor in filling the offensive load for Hall though.

Bobcat Women's basketball 2020 commit Ava Ranson

Ava Ranson is a 5-8 point guard / shooting guard who plays for Timberline high school in Boise Idaho. She is currently in her junior year and committed early to the Bobcats last October, so will be joining the Bobcats, in the fall of 2020. Ranson is currently averaging 18.1 point (#1 in 5A), 2.8 assists (4th in 5A) and 2.8 steals (3rd in 5A). Timberline is currently ranked 4th in the Idaho 5A, they have been ranked as high as #2 but each time they reached that lofty ranking, they got to play her future Bobcat teammate Darian White's Mountain view (read above). The first meeting Timberline pushed Mountain View as close as anyone in Idaho has this season before losing buy 5 points. In the rematch Timberline did not push them as hard as Mountain View came away with a 37 point win! Ranson natural position in college is the point guard spot, but with her good friend Darian White also on the team look for the both of them down the line to be on the court at the same time. Earlier this year Ranson has set a new school records for high point total in a game a single game 36 points. She is also on pace to break the all time scoring record at Timberline sometime early next year. It is still a little bit early but it appears Ranson will play early for the Bobcats.

Looks like Binford landed a good one. 6'3"-handles and shoots like a guard. Intriguing.

Limardo came in for an unoffical visit last fall and I am told loved the program.

Here is what I wrote then
I should have known better! In the men's 2019 recruiting thread I mentioned that this weeks Home Coming weekend is usually a pretty important basketball recruiting weekend. I also indicated that with the Binford's team already having commitments for all of their 2019 scholarships, so it might not be that big of week end for them. Well I still don't know if the Men have any recruits coming in this week end but I can tell that Binford indeed has at least one pretty important recruit in this week-end, but with 2019 scholarships committed, Binford is looking to fill more 2020 scholarships. In this week end is 6-2 wing Katelynn Limardo of Silver HS in Silver City NM. She is a prototypical Binford big girl in that she can shoot the ball from range (deep 3 point land) and can run the floor. As a sophomore she took he team to the NM 4A championship game but cam up a little short. While from New Mexico she has strong connection to the Arizona Basketball scene and that is with whom she has played her AAU basketball. This summer she was the MVP of Northern Arizona basketball camp as an underclassman. Coming into this season as a junior she considered to be a top contender for NM Ms Basketball. Montana State was her first offer earlier this year, but she currently hold offers from UTEP and Northern Arizona (that I know of), but has interest (maybe an offer or two) from Columbia, Princeton, U of NM, NM state, UNLV, Nebraska, and BYU, possibly more.

I am not sure how many scholarships Binford has for 2020 but it looks like she is making an early strong runs at her top prospects for 2020 and may be have them filled before many D-1 schools will have there 2019 recruits committed.

https://d1vv3r1s83df1b.cloudfront.net/b ... _H264.webm
This past season she averaged 18 points 9.4 rebounds 2.6 assists 3.4 steals and 2 blocks while shooting 50% from the field & 39% from three point range for Silver High School who went 22-5 this season. Like I said above she is a junior this season and Binfords second 2020 recruit commitment. She is listed on both her AAU and high school teams roster as a G/F/C This is an outstanding committed! As is 5-9 PG/SG Ava Ranson. 2020 is looking like an outstanding recruiting season.

Any more info on Jones or Johnson? I think we're actually well on the way to an interesting team when you add Belo to Frey, kirby, Ricketts, and paulo. One more scorer wouldn't hurt though. Also, does anyone have any thoughts on who, if anyone on next year's team, might be interested in getting a rebound? Kirby is long enough but constantly got bullied out of position last night.

How do you see Belo fitting in? Sounds like, from his play this year, he's probably plug-and-play? Sounds like the type of kid fish has tried to get to come here for the past 5 years.

That is really good news Belo is so far sticking with MSU. A JC true big guy who avg close to a double double this past year and will have three years to play for the Bobcats. I really look forward to him and Kirby (fingers crossed) in the post the next two year. This means 2 of our 3 fall signing has recommitted, leaving only 6-3 JC guard Mychael Paulo as the only one we have not heard from. If you would have asked me 7-8 days ago I would have thought Paulo would have been the first signee to commit to honoring his LOI he signed last November. Many thought he was a boarder line D-1 player coming into last summer. He had a good summer on the jamboree trail but this year his stats were down all across the board (11.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 40.6% Field Goal and 28.1% 3-Field Goals). In his defense though, his team is much improved this year and made it into the National championship tournament this year. If he honors his LOI I think he will provide with depth at PG & SG some scoring, ball handing off the bench. If he does not I think the new coach will need to recruit another JC guard to replace him.

I was getting a little worried that Binford was only recruiting guards. We're loaded with guards both on the roster and coming in. But then we got a commit from Katelyn Limardo from New Mexico who is 6'3" and now Taylor Janssen from Minnesota who is 6'3"-both for 2020. Kola Bad Bear is 6'2". So we will have some size after Smith and Braxton graduate. I am really excited about the direction of this program.

That could be a fairly imposing front. Will be really interesting. 2019/2020, we are waiting!
