Even for a Big Sky school it is clear that we are woefully undertalented. It's going to be a very long season.

Glad to see you've determined that in 12 minutes of the season.

Down 60-32 at the half. I'm actually impressed offensively. Not bad. But UCLA is just elite tier. They're too big and too good on offense for our D to compete. But I'm actually feeling hopeful for conference play.

Knew it before the season even started. This game makes it pretty fricken obvious. 60-32 at the half. And the announcers said we're not playing that bad...what would the score be if we were playing bad? It's not Fish's fault-the cupboard was bare. And it's not the player's fault-they are what they are-at least they're trying hard.
Enjoy the process I guess.

In summation = our guys suck but at least they try hard!
I'm not saying we'll be a good BSC team, but to base your outlook on the first half, with a new coach, in the first game on the road against a traditionally solid Pac12 program, with all the new guys we are playing, is a bit premature.

If we can keep it even for the second half like a lot of these games go I would be so happy.
*just kidding.

113-78 final. No defense and like I said, UCLA is just too damn good. Which caused us to foul a lot. They shot FORTY free throws.
We did beat them in FT% which is nice. And would have in 3 point % if not for two missed desperation threes at the end. A lot to like facing off against such a good team but a ton to improve on (like 22 turnovers).

Defensively we looked like a bunch of matadors. All we needed was a red cape and to say ole as the UCLA players glided right around us. We were way out talented, but we didn't even compete. I'd like to see Brumwell put someone on the deck once to at least put a little trepidation in their minds as they're dunking on us. I haven't read any Fish post game quotes yet, but I bet he makes a big point about our lack of competitiveness on defense.
After watching the Western game and the first half of the UCLA game it seems clear to me that Fish's offense can get us some shots-even against UCLA's zone we had some looks, but we had to get it up quick. The days of doing the pointless Harlem Globetrotter weave at the top of the key for 30 seconds and then tossing up a desperation 3 are over. Fish's offense will work even better when our 5'9" shooting guards aren't shooting over 6'6" NBA prospects. His offense has a purpose and guys aren't hamstrung like in Huse's system.
Fish could have loaded up with JC guys to be a little better early, but he is clearly rebuilding this thing from the ground up.
Danny Robison plays hard-and if he can stay healthy, which has been an issue for him, he could have a big season. Too bad he isn't a few inches taller.

I liked what I saw offensively actually. We passed the ball well, penetrated well (although that usually led to being surrounded by 3 guys and turning the ball over), and hit some open shots. We'll have a tough time scoring in the paint I think but with good penetration and creative passing it can be done.
Our defense looked like they were standing around last night, but that isn't the case - just out of position, and UCLA is super athletic. Plus UCLA was knocking down 3s so we have to extended the defense.
All in all, despite the score I didn't think we played too bad. We were just outclassed in a big way. But we are breaking in a new coach, new system, and have a lot of very young talent on the team so it will take some time to gel. Can Fish teams come together and get better as the year goes on, unlike the Huse teams who seemed to quit on Huse down the stretch?
