Very interesting, still not sure why MSU is paying him for the the 2014 - 15 season. I thought Peter Fields was suppose to be the financial wizzard, since his public relationship skills are completely absence. hopefully you get the opportunity to see Peter's contract.

What I truly found amazing is the $25,000 bonus if MSU wins the NCAA hoops national championship! Really? Heck, call up Warren Buffet and make it a cool million! I suspect more than one insurance firm would provide the coverage and for a lot less than $25k!

I got a laugh out of that as well. I'd think $25K would be a good carrot for a conference tournament championship/Big Dance appearance. For an NCAA national championship? Anything short of $250K is an insult. If MSU won a national championship in basketball, we would be able to pay that level of a huge bonus 20 times over without breaking a sweat, so why not just put it in there as a carrot (whose odds of being accomplished are probably 1 in 500,000 at best).

Great idea for a series of articles, Colter. This is top-shelf stuff! Anytime a sports writer is filing FOIA requests, you know it's going to be good.

what I found interesting was the incentives for academic achievement versus the incentives for basketball achievement. it seems like there is more emphasis on getting grades and more money to be earned if that emphasis is followed through. I'm not saying that is bad, however maybe there isn't very much time spend on basketball.....or the reason a player leaves due to not being able to endure the grind is because of the grade requirements in addition to basketball. the academic achievement of the team has been remarkable but at what cost?

Thank you Colter for doing these pieces...they've been very informative and interesting. Binford said that considers the program to be "in the top echelon of the conference"...I guess her definition of "top echelon" must be quite a bit different than mine.

One minor correction though...Colter said that MSU was still searching for it's first ever NCAA tourney appearance, but they won the BSC and went to the Big Dance in 1993. MSU beat UM in the final game of the regular season, to tie them for first at 13-1. Since their only losses were to each other, the tourney host was determined by a coin flip, which MSU won, and they beat UM again a week later in Bozeman, to win the title. MSU was seeded 10th in the NCAA tourney, and lost to 7th seed Washington 80-51 in the first round. That was the best season in the history of the program, and the 1992-93 team is in the MSU Hall of Fame.
