MSU - Big Sky Tourney
The MSU men are currently tied for 5th-8th in the Big Sky at 8-10 with Sac State, NAU, and SUU. It looks like they are in pretty good shape for making the BSC Tourney. One win this weekend and they are in (barring an upset of NAU or Sac over UM in their other game) - not likely since UM is still needing to win out to host the tournament. Even if MSU is swept, it will still make the tournament if SUU loses its two remaining games at UNC and at UND (MSU sweep over SUU gets tiebreaker?). As for seeding, who the hell knows. MSU could possibly get the 4 seed if it sweeps this weekend, and could be 7th or out completely if it gets swept. A split would likely put them at 5th or 6th, possibly 7th depending on other results.
The MSU women clinched a tourney spot with their win over SUU tonight. Unless they upset Sac State on the road this weekend, they will be the 6 seed and match up with ISU, EWU, or Sac in the 1st round.

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
So the way I figure it-PSU and ISU are out. EWU needs a miracle but they are mathmatically alive (not sure what senarios they need). Our sweep of SUU gives us the tie breaker so if SUU loses both road games this weekend-and both are very tough games, MSU can probably safely back into the Big Sky tourney without doing a thing. I'm extremely concerned that's what going to happen...and then of course the inevitable first round loss in the Big Sky tourney to either Weber or Montana depending on how that works out. Yuck.

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
If it comes down to RPI's to break the tie, MSU's is by far the lowest...so that's not so good:

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
The RPI scenario is a bit of a stretch I think, as it would require MSU to split with Sac and NAU and then for the team they beat to take down UM in Missoula, while SUU splits road games at UNC and UND that could also bring UNC into the mix at 9-11! My prediction for this weekend is that MSU splits and gets the 6 seed, getting them a first round game with #3 UND.BelgradeBobcat wrote:If it comes down to RPI's to break the tie, MSU's is by far the lowest...so that's not so good:

That actually looks fairly doable. What an awesome train wreck!MSU01 wrote:The RPI scenario is a bit of a stretch I think, as it would require MSU to split with Sac and NAU and then for the team they beat to take down UM in Missoula, while SUU splits road games at UNC and UND that could also bring UNC into the mix at 9-11!

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
Actually, that might not be such a bad scenario. UND swept MSU during the regular season, and the old axiom that "it's difficult to beat a team 3 times" seems to be one of those rare sports cliches that really is very often true. Despite our very respectable showings against both UM and WSU this season, I would still much rather play UND than either one of them. I know that winning a game in the tourney would probably guarantee at least one more season for Huse, and even though that may not be in the best interest of the program long term, it's just not in my DNA to hope that we miss the tourney or lose in the 1st round.MSU01 wrote:The RPI scenario is a bit of a stretch I think, as it would require MSU to split with Sac and NAU and then for the team they beat to take down UM in Missoula, while SUU splits road games at UNC and UND that could also bring UNC into the mix at 9-11! Based on how we've played last week I think we'll win both games this weekend. I think we're getting back to the groove we were in before Big Paul got hurt. I see us winning both and getting the No. 4 seed. Hosting and winning.

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
Truecat I was making a general comment about the mess of having up to four teams completely locked up and having to decide things by rpi. And there's decent chance that it could happen. That's what I meant when I said train wreck. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
But here's fair warning. I will keep commenting on this board. Good bad or otherwise. If you don't like what I have to say then ignore me. I am far from the only one who has articulated their dissatisfaction with our basketball program over and over again.

I believe they changed the tourney format, so that the regular season champ hosts all the games, including the first round. Can anyone confirm or deny?[cat_bracket] wrote:Based on how we've played last week I think we'll win both games this weekend. Yes, you're right the whole thing is in one place this year.John K wrote:I believe they changed the tourney format, so that the regular season champ hosts all the games, including the first round. These message boards exist for that very reason and that is fine, and your right. Nonetheless, I will continue to make positive posts supporting the program and more importantly supporting the young men who wear blue and gold for MSU.

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
Amen...even if we sweep this weekend and win a game in the tourney, I'm not going to be ready to proclaim that suddenly all is well with MSU hoops, and that Huse is the 2nd coming of John Wooden. I'm cautiously optimistic that we might finish the season a little better than we have the last six years (with one exception in 2009), but I don't think that should guarantee Huse any more than one more year.BelgradeBobcat wrote:Truecat I was making a general comment about the mess of having up to four teams completely locked up and having to decide things by rpi. I hope you do keep posting. I enjoy reading what you have to say except when you're taking shots at me.TrueCat wrote:BelgradeBobcat wrote:Truecat I was making a general comment about the mess of having up to four teams completely locked up and having to decide things by rpi. Since 1986 deep down there's always the thought that this team could get hot and win the whole thing. Biglow could pull a Hampton and take us to the promised land. There's always hope.

The shot I took was a result of continued shots that you have fired at the team and the program. We are all frustrated with the situation right now, but it is not as if this team is in the basement. Are they going to win the regualr season conference? No. Are they in the playoffs? It looks like it.
The negativity gets bothersome.

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
The losing in February and March every single year without exception is bothersome. Backing into the Big Sky tourney is bthersome. This board has an ignore feature. If you don't want to read my posts just use that. I'm passionate about Bobcat basketball and this board is my outlet. If I can't rant here I'll probably resort to kicking the dog or something. Other than this one vise i'm a very pleasant person to be around.TrueCat wrote:The shot I took was a result of continued shots that you have fired at the team and the program. Well, I am not a fan of dog-kicking, so if the board is the best outlet then I will support your right to do so.
Just know, I will be waiting....

In the interest of getting this thread back on topic. The Big Sky Conference's weekly release has a lot of conference tournament details, including tie breaker senarios and where each team could end up (scroll down to page 4). Also there's the tournament bracket on page 5.

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
BB still cares enough to be upset about the state of the men's basketball program and post about it. That's pretty rare among Bobcat fans these days. I'd say that's a backhanded compliment to the men's basketball program, all things considered.

Re: MSU - Big Sky Tourney
So unless I missed something, it looks like there is no TV coverage for the tourney, except for the championship game Saturday night on ESPN-U? I thought when the Root TV contract was originally announced, they said they'd be televising the first two rounds of the tourney? Does that sound familiar to anyone else?BelgradeBobcat wrote:In the interest of getting this thread back on topic.
