MSU men's BB - Conference Play

Post by MSU01 » Fri Dec 07, 2012 11:38 pm

Well, MSU basketball begins conference play in 10 days with a road trip to NAU and Sac State before a home tilt with perennial power Northwest Indian on December 29. Just to get this out there because it is so, so, bad...

Brad Huse conference record:

2007: 4-4 in Dec/Jan, 4-5 in Feb/March (loss @PSU BSC Tournament 1st round)
2008: 5-3 in Dec/Jan, 2-7 in Feb/March (loss @WSU BSC Tournament 1st round)
2009: 4-5 in Dec/Jan, 3-7 in Feb/March (wins @UM, @WSU, loss to PSU in BSC Tournament Final)
2010: 6-4 in Dec/Jan, 4-3 in Feb/March (loss vs PSU BSC Tournament 1st round)
2011: 5-4 in Dec/Jan, 2-6 in Feb/March (loss @ NAU BSC Tournament 1st round)
2012: 6-3 in Dec/Jan, 1-7 in Feb/March (loss @ PSU BSC Tournament 1st round)

Winning percentage in December & January is .566 (30-23), which experiences a slight drop to .314 (16-35) in February & March. Is there anything this year to suggest that this trend might change?

There's a good chance the first half will be just as bad as the second half this season.

Biglow is good. He might be the most dynamic point guard we've had since Tony Hampton. Of course Huse has had him playing at the 2 spot.

No pure shooters on this team-they throw up a lot of bricks.

The Big Sky is very weak this season-so there might be a few wins out there-probably just enough to make the Big Sky tourney...and then lose in the first round.

I saw that Idaho State got absolutely crushed by Oregon. (Something like 85 to 35)
So there is a chance we may sweep ISU, but no guarantee.

Our best hope for some conference wins is that the entire Big Sky is weak in basketball.

So what is the reason(s) with poor basketball in the Big Sky?
Is Fuller not doing well with promoting basketball in the Sky?
Or is it just a run of the luck that all the teams are down at once?

Will the addition of the Great West teams and Idaho improve the situation or did it hurt?

I actually think Weber is a better "team" this year than they were last year, of course nobody on the current squad is as talented as Damian Lillard, but the team plays a much better team ball, they like to run and push the tempo, they dont jack up as many three's anymore, players are passing up on open shots for easier shots like layups, and I havent seen Weber play defense like they have so far this year, very aggressive, holding our opponents to an average of 35.7% shooting, and Weber leads the nation in 3 pt % defense.

Of course we will have to see what kind of a team Weber is after thier game with BYU on saturday, if the team that beat Dayton in Ohio shows up, BYU is in trouble.

Just my two cents :)

I thought you always changed your signature line to reflect your love of the basketball coach? I'm not putiing that down, he is good. (at least a lot better than ours.)

Normally I would, but I figured I could put my love for my country, her troops and my love for my college all in one. :D

Update! MSU went 6-5 in conference play in December and January, but is 1-4 in conference play in February and is about to lose to a bad USD team at home. Huse's record now stands at 36-28 (.563 win pct) in Dec/Jan and 17-39 (.304) in Feb/Mar. Bobcat basketball, everyone!
