Men's basketball schedule released

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State faces a bigger Big Sky Conference, fewer non-league games and a couple of difficult stretches in league play during the 2012-13 men’s basketball season, as Bobcat coach Brad Huse revealed his team’s schedule for the upcoming season Friday.
“The new expanded conference schedule has reduced the number of non-conference games we can play,” Huse said, “and we’ve really optimized that portion of the schedule by securing six of our nine non-conference games as home games. In fact, the three road non-conference games are money games and each of those will be interesting challenges for our team.”
MSU battles a familiar foe in its season opener, traveling to Seattle University for a Sunday, Nov. 11 contest against the Redhawks. A week later, the Cats inaugurate the home portion of the schedule with a Sunday, Nov. 18 tilt against Portland. The Bobcats host two West Coast Conference opponents, and one from the WAC. The Bobcats play six of their nine 2012-13 non-league games at home, with all eight of their known non-Big Sky foes – the Cats play a home Bracketbuster game on Feb. 24 – hailing from the western U.S.
The regional flavor of MSU’s out-of-conference schedule provides a hidden but important benefit, Huse says. “The greatest benefit to our non-conference schedule is that we miss only one class day the entire first semester for game travel. Minimal missed class time was really an emphasis as we were finalizing the non-conference portion of our schedule.”
With an 11-team Big Sky in 2012-13, the Bobcats face a league schedule unlike any it’s seen. The conference campaign begins on Dec. 17 and 19 with a two-game road swing to NAU and Sacramento State. That launches a stretch of seven league games over a four-week period, with five on the road. The Bobcats close the regular season with three straight home games.
“We have some unique challenges in the conference schedule, including two stretches that have us playing five out of seven games on the road, but I think every team in our conference has to deal with a quirk or two,” Huse said. “It isn’t easy to schedule with an odd number of teams, like we have in the Big Sky.”

Is there a new format to the schedule with the two new schools? I see we only play Idaho State once.

Could be Valentine's Day; MSu plays at UNC early, then back-to-back vs. UNC? Hm.

It would probably be bad form for KMAX to have a countdown till Huse is gone instead of a countdown to kickoff.

Not a bad schedule at all, Bobcats have a great shot at doing really well with it.

It's his way of saying we'll kick your butt and you will win less than 50% of your games.

Meaning that the February losing streak this year will only be 6 games instead of the usual 8?

They're all beatable by somebody, just not by this MSU team. Maybe 2002's team or Michigan State's team, though.

I think it is interesting that the Bobcats are playing Northwest Indian College (NWIC) on December 29. I do not recall the any past games between the Bobcats and NWIC. Does anybody know anything about NWIC, or have any insight as to why after all of these years NWIC made it on to the Bobcats' schedule?

http://www.nwic.edu/group/athletics http://www.nwic.edu/news/nwic-men-win-a ... ampionship All you need to know about NWIC without Wikipedia. As to why they are on the schedule: looking at the schedule itself, it's MSU's only game between Dec 19 (at Sac State) and Jan 3 (vs Portland State). Probably want to keep players a little fresh but give them a game so there's not 15 days off in between games. B) Guaranteed win.

Would it be wrong of me to suggest that it's also a test of the team's early-season conditioning?

Maybe if it were in November; they'll have nine games and be two games into conference season by then. Nine games isn't much, but that's enough, I think.

Not putting words in BnBnG's mouth, but I think he was gently trying to ask about the ability to run the floor with a largely-Native BB team.
