How do we look this year?
Have we played enough games this year to tell how this team will compete in the BSC this year? How does next year look (2011-12) with the loss of Howard?

Re: How do we look this year?
from what i have seen so far this team is going to be much like the last couple years. we will always give a lot of effort. honestly one of my favorite things about this team is they always seem to work hard. which is good because we are going to be outsized just about every game we play. we struggle to rebound the ball and on offense our inside presence is pretty much invisible. i think our effort will keep most of our games competitive. if we are knocking down shots we'll win some games but when the deep ball isn't falling we'll struggle. only from what i've seen so far, i'd say just making the big sky tournament would be a great accomplishment in itself...

Re: How do we look this year?
Yea...we're more athletic than most years, but very young and smallish. Cody Anderson is 6-10 and so is Jeff Budnich but Cody is fairly slow. Budnich is skinny and doesn't like to bang; he's the heir apparent to Brandon Johnson. Tre Johnson is 6-7 and very athletic; so is Alou but neither is physical. Reid is 6-5 and looks like the heir apparent to Rush although he may be more of a forward than a guard. McCall is about 6-4 and Tor Anderson is a little smaller both are 2 guards. Both are supposed to be good shooters. Both point guards are tiny like Weber, PSU and NCU have had in the past years. Both are quick and good ball handlers. Singleton is a JR and Trujeque is a Freshman. The only blue collar banger is Bobby Howard. He tries to fill two roles, shooter and rebounder/inside scorer. He actually does quite well....Rush is the slasher and gets about 4 dunks a game...he's a highlight waiting to happen. He still has a hard time in traffic. Piepoli is still a good shooter. I look for him to have a breakout year. We are going to have touble with teams like UM and Weber who have good big men, in fact anyone who has good big men unless, like others have said, we get hot from outside....because Reid, Singleton, Trujeque, Rush, Piepoli, Howard, McCall, Both Andersons and Budnich can shoot the three!

Cody Anderson drew some praise from Huse after last night's game. He's the keystone to a successful season.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: How do we look this year?
couln't agree more. cody finally had a good game last night...but did anyone notice he still got most of his points from "jump" shots? that is great against teams like last night who the hawks could have beaten. what about when we play conference gaes and anderson is back to his 4 ppg and 3 rpg?!BelgradeBobcat wrote:That statement is absolutely terrifying.TomCat88 wrote:He's the keystone to a successful season.
*disclaimer*
those aren't cody's real stats as i didn't bother looking them up but i have seen enough games to know they're close! if he's the keystone to a successful season i'm more worried than i was and i question even more huse's ability to recruit. he's a great x's and o's guy but i haven't been real impressed with the talent he's gotten so far.

It appears there isn't a small forward or 2 guard he doesn't like! Like Mick the program seems to misfire on big men (centers).

We'll at least Huse's guys are 3 or 4 inches taller than Durham's guys. Durham liked 3 guards in the starting lineup and Huse uses 3 or 4 small forwards. It seems both coaches have a problem recruiting guys taller than they are.Helcat72 wrote:It appears there isn't a small forward or 2 guard he doesn't like! Re: How do we look this year?
Sorry for the lateness (sp) but can't sleep... I've been told that I'm out of line or too defensive and I keep being told to judge it how I see it. Well I see it this way... We are a few plays from being 8-2 which would put us at the top of the league. We have one of the best playmakers in rush and we got howard. We are definitely undersized but portland state won the conference with their tallest player at 6'7". And has anyone of you seen Allou get beat for a board? No the guy is a machine when focused. For those who say we don't have an interior presence... What is it about howard that says he is not a post player? Because he can shoot? Over the course of this year and last he has been our guy downlow. Who scores better down there in our league than him? He hits a three or two and averages 15. So where do the other 9 to 12 come from. He is currently sixth in our league in rebounding as well. I guess I just am really excited about this team because I saw the five game win streak and know they are better than 6-4. And bring on the griz they have to be able to guard us too. And I think once the new guys get their roles settled and huse figures out a rotation that doesn't stretch to 11 or 12 guys we will be in the top 3. At worst 4th and ill have you know 4th won the tournament last year. I won't dare say who it was
. Hope I explained myself better and not as defensive but really look at the facts this team has all the tools of becoming a very special team this season.
P.S. Like someone else said if we are relying on cody to show up every night were dead!

Re: How do we look this year?
trust me, there isn't anyone on this board that isn't hoping you're right. personally i'd love to see us having a great season. i just think we are too young, and too small to make a run in this league. we work our butts off and we are very athletic but i don't see that winning a lot of games just by working hard. we still rely way too much on the three and when they aren't hitting we aren't winning. we won't know much until mid-january but i would be more than happy to be wrong on this one. and if i am i'll come back to this thread and say i had it all wrong.

I don't mean Anderson has to go 20 and 10 every night, but he needs to be on the court for 15 minutes and be productive on the glass. 5-6 rebounds and some defense would help immensely. Same for Allou, who had a couple good games against Fullerton and Minot State.
Rush, Singleton and Howard form a good trio, but MSU needs someone to step up inside. Anderson, due to his size, is the preferred option, IMO.

We will get a good indication of how we will be next week...We play Weber and NAU in Bozeman...probabaly the best two teams along with the Griz in the conference.....
