Thurs: Montana State at Weber, 3 PM
TV: On the Internet at Big Sky TV | RADIO: On the Internet at KLO 1430 AM
New Year's Eve at 3 PM Weber State will host Montana State for its first home conference game. The game will be the 104th all-time meeting between the 2 schools.
Last season, the last week of the year WSU closed out a record setting 15-1 season by going 8-0 on the road. No Big Sky team had ever won 8 road games in one season. WSU notched its 8th road win in Bozeman beating MSU 84-64. Damian Lillard scored a then career-high 27 points. Kellen McCoy, last year's Big Sky MVP dropped in 20 points, "The Real" McCoy scored 15 points in the first 9 minutes to give WSU a double-digit lead just 6 minutes into the first half.
WSU's lone season loss was a 75-70 decision to MSU in Ogden earlier in the season.
The next meeting between WSU and MSU was in the semifinal game of the Big Sky Tournament. In the quarterfinal MSU traveled to Missoula and beat Montana 56-54. With MSU coming to Ogden for the Big Sky semifinal WSU had just received 5 votes (35th) in the AP Top 25. BYU was ranked 25th, Utah 29th with 29 votes, Utah State 33rd with 6 votes.
In the semifinal game after WSU had just won 12 straight games the 'Cats fell to the Bobcats 70-61. It took MSU 46 years to muster up 9 wins in Ogden and then in 2009 the Bobcats beat WSU twice and at the Dee. In the game MSU's Branden Johnson made four 3-pointers scoring 16, Divaldo Mbunga added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kellen McCoy led WSU with 16 points. The Wildcats couldn't get any shots to fall after being such a good shooting team all year. WSU shot 33% in the game and was just 4-of-26 from downtown.
It's now 2010 and WSU is back and ready for another run for the Big Sky title. WSU is already 1-0 with an early December conference win on the road at Sac State. The 'Cats have won 14 straight conference regular season games and 9 straight conference road games and even 10 straight regular season conference road wins dating back to March 3rd of 2008.
Weber's all-time record against Montana State is 69-34 overall, 43-11 in Ogden, and 26-23 at MSU. Notable alumni of Montana State include Dennis Erickson, current head football coach at Arizona State, Craig Kilborn the actor and former talk show host played basketball for the Bobcats. Also, the Big Sky's only school to ever win a national championship in men's basketball was MSU in 1929.
Randy Rahe is 10-4 against the Montanas, 5-3 vs MSU and 5-1 vs UM. WSU hasn't lost to the Montana Griz since January of 2007.
Preseason Polls
In the Big Sky preseason polls Montana State was picked to finish 5th by the coaches and media and WSU was picked 1st. Lindy's College Basketball magazine picked Montana State to win the Big Sky with Weber in 2nd.
Lindy's take on MSU: The Bobcats more than made up for a sub-par regular season in March. After barely garnering the sixth and final berth into the Big Sky Tournament, the Bobcats upset rival Montana on the road and then No. 1 seed Weber State on its home court. In the title game, MSU came oh-so-close before falling to Portland State, 79-77. For his work, coach Brad Huse was awarded a three-year contract extension. More good news in Bozeman: The Bobcats return four starters, led by leading scorer Will Bynum, and fellow double digit scorer Bobby Howard. The loss of first-team all-confernce post Divaldo Mbunga is a huge one, however.

Re: WSU vs MSU New Yrs Game
I think MSU is going to be one of the strongest teams in the Conf this season, them and UNC, and Weber has to play both of them in their first 3 games, oh and that other montana team that nobody cares about.
Even though I really like the bobcats, I really really really really hope Weber wins

Re: WSU vs MSU New Yrs Game
It's good to see basketball season here and full-on.
As I see it the Big Sky is short on favorites and long on dark horses this year (Northern Colorado has really come out of the blue). It will be an interesting season.
Go Bobcats!

Re: WSU vs MSU New Yrs Game
Fortunately for the Cats, we stole one early from a really strong UNC Bears team. The league will be strong up and down through the entire conference. With the loss of Mbunga, I really am leery about our interior post play. Cody Anderson is a decent player, but lacks alot of the aggression and talent. I think the Cats will live and die by our perimeter game. As always, Weber will be a force. But so will UNC, UM, and ISU. This will be a really fun year to watch!

Anyone know what radio station it will be on in Helena? The radio network of the new website doesn't show anything of the sort, just live links, which doesn't work here at my work (blocked).

That station is hit & miss. Granted, it is the station in Helena for Bobcat sports, but during basketball season, there are many times I turn the station on and there is no game, leaving to load up the computer and listen on-line.grizzh8r wrote:Try 950 AM KMTX. Re: WSU vs MSU New Yrs Game
RANDY RAHE QUOTES
ON MONTANA STATE: "They return four of their five starters and their two best bench players from last season, so they are a veteran team and they are off to a great start in league play. Obviously we know how well they can play. Coach Huse really stresses fundamental basketball 101. By that I mean, they do all the little things well like blocking out, making good passes at the right time, pressure defense and not losing your man and running the offense with patience and a purpose which makes them hard to defend."
ON WEBER STATE: "I was pleased with our efforts last week in Logan. We fought through some adversity and played hard to the end and that is all you can ask. If there is concern right now it would rebounding. We didn't block out very well, especially in the last two games, so we need to address that this week and get ourselves physically and mentally ready to attack every missed shot."

BSTV has the game scheduled for 4:05 MST, so unless they figure out their screwup there's no live coverage.

Down 1 at the half. We don't seem to want to play well with the lead, but brought a 7 point deficit in no time. Piepoli is hot-3 threes.
