WBB Playoffs: Lady Cats vs NAU

Post by bpcats » Thu Mar 12, 2009 9:48 am

The first game in the playoffs is always the hardest and NAU has thumped us twice. The ladies team has the potential to make a run at the championship but this may be their toughest matchup.

Oh crap I forgot this game was early! Good thing I checked the board, now I get to see the second half.

We are getting out-everythinged right now. Plus we are cold as ice. Not good, down 3.

NAU to the lady Cats is like the men's team vs Idaho State. I hope we survive.

Yeah, sort of the opposite of your men's team right now, particularly on the boards.

GREAT crowd in Missoula for an early game without the Griz playing.

Two big 3's by Bussey when we needed them the most. That is why she was freshman of the year for the conference

Yes, they really appreciate women's basketball in Missoula.

That's a good win for MSU considering the opponent. NAU dominated us more than even UM this year. We didn't even come close to beating these gals all year. That was our sixth win in seven games. Last time out against NAU we lost by 19 at home, so a 29 point swing tonight from that game. The first game was a 15-pt loss.

Next up PSU. That's our only loss in the last seven. I think we've made it three teams in the running for the championship with the way we've played down the stretch. We had a tough night defensively against the Viks and that was the most points (75) we allowed in the last seven games. We've only allowed 65 ppg in the six wins.

With the way Coach Binford has built this team we should be a consistent top 3 team each year. They will need another tremendous effort tomorrow night against Portland State

Do you, or anyone else for that matter, think UM matches up better against MSU or PSU? I'm asking, because I don't much about any of these teams other than what I gather out of the newspapers and reading stats.

I think it's a tough call, Tom. I'm not really anxious to face either team frankly. PSU scares me simply because they are very, VERY good. MSU scares me because they are good, playing well lately, it's a rivalry game and those are always tough, and because it is difficult to beat a team 3 times in a season. From a pure match-up standpoint, I like the Griz chances against the cats more so than the viks, I guess.

I'd have to agree. The set up playing three straight nights isn't conducive for any of the bottom four seeds. Only one team that wasn't a two seed (NAU in 2006) has won the tourney since it went to a six-team format in 1996. However, their opponent was a No. 5 seed, which also had to play three straight nights. There have been seven match-ups between top two seeds and bottom four seeds. The margins of victory has been 36, 6, 17, 9, 16, 31, and 12. So one kind of close game.

UM matches up better with MSU in my opinion. UM has a great combination of post players in Lohman and Sarah Ena and matching that with the outside shooting of Rogers and Morales and it is a lot to overcome.

The womens team for Portland State is a lot like their men's team. When they start shooting the ball well almost no one can beat them.

The Lady Griz are the class of Big Sky and Coach Selvig always has them playing their best down the stretch. It would take an off night from the Lady Griz for MSU or PSU to stand a chance of knocking them off.

I don't think it would take an off night by the Lady Griz - just think that the Cats would need to play a great game to beat them.
