WBB vs. Idaho

Post by BelgradeBobcat » Sat Dec 20, 2008 5:18 pm

Good game today by the ladies-knocking off the vile Idahole Vandals 64-52. We had a dismal stretch in the first half and trailed by 5, but took over in total early in the 2nd and never looked back. Rebounding is definitely a concern of this team.

Montana State junior Jenny Heringer recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds to rally the Bobcat women’s basketball team to a 64-52 win over Idaho, Saturday afternoon in Worthington Arena.

Montana State (5-5) got out to an early 16-8 lead at the 11:40 mark on a Heringer three-pointer. Idaho (3-7) answered with a 15-4 run to take a 23-20 margin with 4:14 remaining following a Rachele Kloke triple.

The Vandals entered intermission with a 29-24 advantage.

“We were flat in the first half,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We talked at half time about pushing the tempo and taking care of the ball. The players did a nice job responding to our request.”

MSU opened the second stanza with a 9-2 run to regain the lead at 33-31 on a Heringer three-pointer with 16:09 remaining. The Bobcats built their largest margin at 62-47 with 3:11 left on an Erica Perry free throw.

Montana State outscored the Vandals 40-23 in the second half, shooting 55 percent from the field. MSU’s second-half run was sparked by Nubia Garcia with nine points, while Sarah Strand and Heringer each added eight.

“Erica (Perry) really did a nice job pushing the ball, and I thought Sarah Strand made some nice adjustments in the second half. I’m very happy with how strong we finished,” Binford said.

After committing eight turnovers in the first half, the Bobcats had just one miscue in the final stanza.

Heringer, a Billings Central graduate, finished shooting six-of-13 from the field, including a four-of-eight performance from long distance. In addition, she dished out a career-high six assists and had one steal.

Strand and Garcia each reached double-figures as well with 10 points apiece. Perry, a 5-foot-4 guard, ended the game with eight points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

MSU held Idaho to 29 percent from the field, including 25 percent in the second half. The Bobcats shutdown UI’s leading scorer, holding Yinka Olorunnife to two points.

Idaho was led in the loss by Kloke with 18 points and Derisa Taleni with 16 points and ten rebounds.

MSU will be off until it travels to the University of Texas-Pan American tournament Dec. 28-29.

I was pretty impressed with the ladies team today. They were sluggish in the first half, and couldn't grab a rebound to save their lives. Coach Binford must have made some amazing halftime adjustments (based on what she said on the radio, most likely with her high heeled boots). The team was great in the second half. They were short handed, too, with 7 players getting the bulk of the playing time and 2 coming in for short times. Jenny Heringer was excellent and Erica Perry had a great game. The ladies looked good today, and I hope they can continue their success on a long road trip.

GO CATS!
