Re: WBB vs Carroll
I was at the Carroll game and had a great time—though the deer I sideswiped on Homestake Pass didn’t enjoy the evening as much as I did.
Much of what I saw has already been covered in other posts, but this was a really fun team to watch. The first five minutes had me a little worried about the shooting; the Bobcats missed several layups, and at one point in the first quarter their shooting percentage dipped below 30%. But they shook off the rust and finished the quarter around 42%. Oh ye of little faith.
My biggest takeaway was the defense. The minute Carroll bobbled the ball, the Bobcats—and I mean all of them—pounced like sharks smelling blood in the water. Some of the Carroll fans near me were yelling “foul” every 20 seconds. There will definitely be an away game where we get an inexperienced ref who anticipates fouls and hits the Bobcats with a bunch of whistles. That’s why it’s important for them to establish themselves early as a tough defensive team, so once conference play starts, refs understand their style and call the game fairly.
The other thing I wanted to highlight was the play of freshman Couture (and I’ll admit I’m a little biased!). She looked like a veteran out there—poised and confident. She only had two points, but in her 19 minutes she filled up the rest of the stat sheet. My only criticism is that she needs to look for her own shot more. She passed up several open looks, though in her defense she was usually finding an open teammate.
On a more concerning note, I’m a little worried about the players who didn’t suit up—presumably due to injury. Courtney Smith didn’t play and wasn’t on the bench. Dylan Phillip and Tegan Erickson were both in street clothes. Phillip and Erickson, in my opinion, are potential starters. We used only 10 players in a blowout, so hopefully we don’t run into more injury issues before Smith, Phillip, and/or Erickson return.

I think MSU is going to be good, but I think CC might be way down this year. They lost Jamie Pickens to graduation. She was the NAIA player of the year last year.
I didn't go to the game, but the stat sheet isn't all that impressive. Barely 30% from 3. 53% total FGs, which is good, but you'd expect that against an NAIA team of the caliber that I think CC is this year.
Defense in women's/girl's basketball is the No. 1 thing, and the defense by MSU was off the charts from the looks of it. Getting 37 turnovers is massive. If that translates to the BSC, then MSU is in for a big year, regardless of the shooting.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

MSU easily could have scored 110 points in that game had they done a better job of finishing at the rim, but to their credit they missed a lot in the first quarter and then definitely improved as the game went on. I don't think 3-point shooting is going to be a strength this year given the players they lost from last year's team to graduation and transfer, but they can more than overcome that with how well they play defensively.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 4:04 pmI think MSU is going to be good, but I think CC might be way down this year. That first quarter was especially rough (looked like a new season) but they still scored 28 points.MSU01 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 4:36 pmMSU easily could have scored 110 points in that game had they done a better job of finishing at the rim, but to their credit they missed a lot in the first quarter and then definitely improved as the game went on.
