WBB vs Sac State for First Place Saturday afternoon

Post by aucat » Fri Jan 27, 2023 2:23 pm

Really a huge game this Saturday for the Bobcat women. As others have posted, very impressed by the defensive intensity. We needed it with several players out sick. Hope they are ready for Saturday's game. Grace Beasley is coming into her own. Terrific player.

Frankly, after the big win over UM in Missoula and with school back in session, I was disappointed at the turnout Thurs. night vs. PSU. Maybe it was the big cross town rival game between Bozeman vs. Gallatin girls (which Gallatin won convincingly) I don't know. But this team deserves bigger crowds and so do the men for that matter.

The UM women beating Sac State was really a surprise. We need a raucous crowd to cheer on this team Saturday afternoon. First place in the conference is on the line. Go Cats!

If anyone watched that UM game Thursday, Sac took the lead before halftime and held a10-13 point lead until the 4th quarter when Gfeller found out. The younger girls took over and made up the difference by the final buzzer. They were lead by Bartsch, Konig, and Fatkin upped the tempo and Sac doesn't have the depth to run at this elevation. The 3 pt. shots they were hitting in the first half weren't dropping late. They did a great job.

The big question here is how many players will see the court tomorrow? Sac uses a short bench and only played 7 against the Griz, while MSU appears to have illness issues running through the team.

Huge game today and the ladies will have to keep Kahlaijah Dean in check somehow. 4 time conference player of the week and probably leading candidate for conference MVP. The moment the game goes live on ESPN, I’ll be looking to see how many Cats are suited up for the game and not out sick.

As mentioned by others who of the Lady Cats will be healthy enough to play this afternoon? That could be a key factor. Also, as mentioned by 01, SacSt plays 4 girls over 30 min per game (including their two post players) with a couple others averaging close to 20 min then it falls off significantly. As a bit of a side note Mattie Olson has been cleared to play as of Thursday but I am not sure she will see a lot of minutes as Coach will start working her in slowly.

Would be nice to see a good crowd today but I suspect it will be sparse with the weather and road conditions like they are. Get there if you can “safely” do so…the Ladies need your spirit in the stands.

Cats close out the first half of season at 7-2 and todays game kicking off second half means outright conference lead or a likely 3-way tie for second place. In first half of season we played Idaho twice and in second half we get to play SacSt twice.

If interested in knowing more about SacSt…..interesting that they seem to be using the transfer approach in a “robust” manner with 6 transfers on team (Minnesota, Iowa Western, Utah State, Illinois, Emmaeus College, Oakland University).

You will get to see one of the most dynamic players in the league in Kahlaijah Dean. Dean has already been named Big Sky player of the week FOUR times in 11 weeks. Between her and Beyoncé Bea from Idaho they have went back and forth on who leads the conference in scoring…currently Dean is sitting around 21.5 ppg. She shoots right at 40% from the arc and has already taken over 100 shots from the arc….so expect her to fire away any time she sees an opening. Top all that with her 30 steals to show she hustles on D too. She does make quite a few turnovers…..her assist to turnover sits right at 1 to 1. But obviously teams need to keep her in check which opens assists to her fellow players.

Top Dean with two posts that have been doing well. If you saw Sac play last year you might remember Natabou at 6’5” and a lady who “occupies a lot of space”. She doesn’t jump much but doesn’t have to…she averages over 15 ppg with over 11 rebounds and 24 blocked shots. The other key post is Peneueta who at 6’2” has already blocked 29 shots in addition to her 9 ppg and 6 rebounds. While Natabou is not a threat from the arc, Peneueta will shoot the 3 ball having already taken 40 shots from the arc and making 44% of them. As a team SacSt shoots 37% from the arc….so Bobcat D has a tough assignment today to protect the arc and stop the post play. And as Bobcat4Ever has mentioned in another thread, with SacSt two posts already blocking over 50 shots it would be nice to use the board more and some hook shots because they will be difficult to go over the top or muscle through. Perhaps if we have the bench depth today and play uptempo…maybe fresh legs coming off the bench can win the day….

Regarding the crowd, ha, Bridger Bowl can only accommodate so many people. 31 inches up there of new snow. Hope the "old folks" turn out today for this game.

Whoa….31” of new powder….uhhhh maybe I need to rethink my plans for day! Ha!

But then I look at my weather gauge and it says 11 degrees and 18mph winds….my old body says……”teeter” or “old guy shuffle”to the game.

Once again, the Bobcats start out looking like a team that's only just learning that the goal of the game is to put the ball through the orange round thingy.

I get the whole cancer thing but these pink uniforms are hideous. They got upset by EWU last year when wearing them.

Can't shoot, can't rebound, can't defend. Other than that, going pretty well so far. This is the Arizona State game all over again.

Attack the basket! Long range jumpers are not the answer.

Bold strategy on defense to just leave players standing all alone at the 3-point line. We'll see if it pays off, Cotton.

On pace to give up 100. Sac 7-9 from 3. Impressive even if wide open looks.

Defense was better the 2nd quarter. Only gave up 11 that period. Offense is just awful. Shooting couldn't be worse across the board. Someone is going to have to hit some shots to have a chance to get back in this one.

A 10-0 run to start the 2nd half has us right back in it. Down 39-36 with 5:00 left in the 3rd.

Just need to win the 4th like we did the 3rd.

Can't make up my mind as to which is better - 55-21 or 48-14.

Down 51-48 to start the 3rd. Dean is just killing us today.
