Men's BB 2-0 in exhibition play

The Cats walloped Western State 78-55 tonight in the Brick! 2-0 in exhibition - 1st game that counts is Friday night vs. Utah Valley State.

Mark Desin played point guard extensively tonight in the second. Guess that answers the question if he is going to redshirt. Sounded like he played really well. Brandon Johnson also had a big night!

Way to go Cats and Coach Huse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My bad - after listening to Coach Huse in the postgame interview, he stated that by NCAA rules, he has until Thursday to decide on using redshirts. So I guess Desin could still end up with a redshirt.

I think Desin is a great spark plug. I was amazed how much speed he brought to the court. I guess I hadn't seen Desin on the basketball court. Branden Johnson really impressed me in the two exhibition games and he's an inside and outside threat. Nick Dissly and Carson Durr had nice games, too. The bottom line is the team looked a lot more sharp than the first game and really showed a nice improvement. Next up, we go to Utah Valley State and I think this team will need to improve more for the regular season. Nice work tonight by the Bobcats.

I disagree with you about Durr. I was not impressed with him tonight very much. He had a much better game against Minot.

Lol. Alright. We can agree on that then.
I thought we played well overall tonight. We desperately need Ted back, however. I have no idea how long he is going to be out, but it better not be for long. I thought Desin played excellent defense tonight. His shots were a little off but his passing was superb. I am willing to bet that Desin and Piepoli are for-sure redshirts. I have no idea on the others.

To start the game Huse said Ted should be practicing on his ankle by Tuesday and can possibly play Friday. If he is not back Friday he will be back soon after that.

He is Sooooooo underappreciated by people like you......he is a great leader, great in the classroom......come on......points are not everything.....let's see what Johnson does against Big Sky teams.

Let me start off by saying that I really hope Durr has a great year, he deserves it, and he is one of the finest example of what it means to be a Bobcat. The younger player really do look up to him I have heard many times this year how he will go the extra mile to help the young player, and how he sets a the tone in practice with his hustle and aggressive play. That said though, Durr really needs to become a threat (as do all players, on the offencive side of the ball. If he does not, he becomes a liablity for his team mates. Defences can sag off him and double others. Durr needs to hit the shots in games like he does in practice. That is the single most important thing he needs to establish. I am not talking double digit points (although that would be nice) but 6-8 points to game, make himself a threat, and force teams to play him honest. As we get into conferece this is going to be very important.

Just my opinion.

Rebounding was definitely a detriment last night. It didn't look like we were boxing anyone at times. Desin is going to be exciting at the least and if he gets his shot even close he'll be a threat as well. 3 assists in 13 minutes isn't too bad. I loved Eric's (23) shot. Great elevation and such a soft release. Free throws were good (not as good as Sat) again (11-15).
We will miss Ted on the Defensive end if he doesn't make it back soon.
Next Monday vs UCSB will give it a better measure.

I never said he wasn't a leader or a great guy in the classroom. Stop making me sound like the bad guy. If you actually watched the game last night, you can agree that his offensive game was very disappointing. He missed shots he should have made and put up some shots that he probably shouldn't have. I agree with mslacat about him as well. He does deserve a huge season and I wish him the best in that. I applaud him for his leadership and seniority. "People like me" think he is a great leader and a student but expect more on the court and can see when his game needs to improve.

I say we only redshirt Piepoli or no one. Huse seems worried about us only having ten guys.

I like Carson Durr as a player and a person. He's a great guy and does his best on both the basketball court and in the classroom. I'm not making anyone out to be the bad guy, but Carson Durr is a player that I'm glad is a Bobcat.

I Agree Piepoli needs a redshirt and he could benefit a lot from that. I also think Travis needs a redshirt year but that depends a lot on if Ted can come back from the ankle injury. Desin on the other hand why not use him now while we have him for the entire year who will know what could happen when he plays football the next 4 years. If they make the playoffs and he is playing the next four years he would not be able to join the basketball team until December.

I really think this team will struggle with the inside game early but I like the idea of playing Dissley at the 4 spot in spurts I think he offers up some interesting match up problems for our opponents but I agree rebounding is definetly going to be a problem but I'm sure coach Huse will get a handle on it.

Any thoughts on if Desin will be happy with a redshirt. It seems to me that with a Football scholarship that is his priority. I would think he came to Basketball knowing he was redshirting in football and not going to play. I can't see someone that competetive wanting to practice all year again with no chance of playing.

I continue to hear Kramer has big plans for Desin, but I do think Desin is enjoying the heck out of playing Basketball

A few thoughts on the team...
I think that this team has some potential this season if they show steady improvement throughout the year.

Newcomers:
I was very impressed with Rush. The kid has some serious game and will be a superstar in the future. He seems to be the best freshman on the squad by far. I think Davis should be the clearly the number one redshirt candidate. He seems to be a little lost on the court and could really benefit with a redshirt year. Piepoli has some serious athleticism and has the potential to be a contributor down the road this season, however a redshirt year would help him tremendously. He needs a year in the weight room to be ready to compete at the D-1 level. I like Taylor at the point. He is really strong on the ball and can get to the rim with his strength and athleticism. Zamora seems a little soft in the paint, but he has good size and athleticism as well. Granted Ted is not the greatest big man in MSU history, we are VERY weak in the paint without him.

Returners:
Dissly seems poised to have the type of year we've been anticipating for the last three seasons. Diss and Durham are going to have to play a lot of minutes for us this year. One thing you can always rely on Casey for is that he will give 100% all of the time and you can't ask for much more. I really feel that the key to the Cats having any success this year is Durr. He needs to be a threat on the offense end and needs to be able to hit outside shots on a consistent basis which I believe he can do.

I was at the game and he missed three shots, made three and was 1-1 from the free thrown line. He hustled, passed the ball great and directed traffic for the team...that is his role. Dissly is the big shooter, others shoot, and he plays defense. I have known him since high school and he deserves much more credit that he ever gets.

You are not a bad guy at all.....just not a good judge of the role each player has on a TEAM.
