Recruiting for 2009 already
The state of Arizona continues to produce top young talent. The 2009 class has already began to show itself to basketball entusiasts in the state, as numerous players are beginning to standout. Basha HS 6-foot-6 sophomore forward Tyler Miller is among the top young performers in the state, and is coming off an impressive season as a freshman starter.
Miller had a very productive freshman campaign, starting 24 of 26 games last season for a team that finished 10-16 on the season, while playing in the toughest region in the state, the Central Region. In route, Miller averaged 13.8 points 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per/game, while shooting 45% from the field and 85% from the free throw line.
Miller had highs in scoring last season of 21 in a loss to Desert Vista HS, 19 points in a defeat to Corona Del Sol HS, and 23 points in a loss to Maryvale HS. In the Maryvale game, Miller also connected on a career high 7 three-pointers.
"We were a very young team at Basha," said Miller. "We had two freshmen and two sophomores of our five starters on the team. In addition, we had zero seniors."
As a result, Miller was selected to the All-Region team last season, and was selected as an honorable-mention all-state selection for the Arizona Republic newspaper.
"A lot of my success last year, goes to Nick (Markovich) and my teammates and coaches," said Miller.
Since last season, Miller has sprouted to 6-foot-6 in heigth, gaining three inches since last year's high school season ended. This season, Miller advised Arizona Preps, that he will be focusing on stepping up his overall play, while also raising his individual leadership considerably.
"Since last season, I traveled to many national tournaments in the spring and summer," said Miller. "I wanted to develop my overall play."
Miller credited Russ Pennell, Mark Nelson and the Arizona Premier staff for aiding in his current development as a player.
"I have been training on my individual basketball skills with Arizona Premier's Russ Pennell 3-4 times per/week," said Miller. "He is really helping me understand the game, and what it takes at my young age. He is developing my floor game and my mental approach."
Miller told us that he is currently receiving a lot of division-I interest early in his recruitment.
"I have started receiving college recruitment early," said Miller. "I'm receiving interest from many low, mid and high major division-I programs across the country thus far," said Miller.
Miller said that he is hearing from Northern Arizona, Baylor, Portland State, Rice, Texas Tech, Montana State, Yale, Army, Air Force, Montana Tech, and South Dakota Tech currently.
"The schools with very good academic programs in science or engineering interest me," said Miller.
Miller is a superb student, carrying a 4.25 GPA and ranking ninth overall among his high school class.

That has to be a weighted GPA. Bozeman uses this for example, where AP and other difficult classes are given 5 points for an A, 4 for a B, 3 for a C, and so on instead of the standard scale. But he must be very smart to get over a 4.0. That means he's doing very well indeed.
GO CATS!
It's always a good day to be a Bobcat fan!

My name is Steve, if you'd like to know.

You know I seriously thought about doing the math, given the fact I am known as a math geek, but I thought that was a little too geeky even for me.
