My Take

Post by MAGOO » Mon Sep 18, 2006 9:25 am

Listened to CSD 1st 1/2; got final score from old friend in Bozeman; couldn't bear to read the Gazette (best classified as a mediocre news supplement to a red hot Daily Shopping Guide); got pumped up Sunday watching da Bears demolish Lions with a vicious defense, a young QB playing pass and catch with a couple of hard working receivers, and a big-hearted young running back; and avoided BN posts until this morning. Interesting comments from posters re Bailey serving as OC and QB coach. My take is that Bailey is spending far too much time as a QB coach trying to build Carpenter's game confidence --- two-bit quick outs that yield anywhere from -2 to +3 yards, and are becoming way too routine and obvious to the defense. He (Bailey) needs to focus more on an overall balanced, and no more than 6-play O scheme and work with the O line and RB coaches to make the whole thing work. Carpenter should be familar with show after watching it from the #2 post for the last three + years; give him a 3-series shot against EWU, and if he still is shy and uncertain, run Rolovich in after telling him that if he can get the job done, he will start against Weber. A number of posts got on the defense's back: I think the defense will do fine if they get a breather now and then. Kramer needs to spend more time with Kristoff --- he needs help. Linebackers speed needs to be utilized by blitzing regularly and routinely. Lastly, we need a not only a win against EWU, we need a decisive win to jack up the entire team and staff.

I could observe this on t.v., and if that's the case, it's 10 times as bad in real life:

Carpenter had no confidence in his ability to read the D. I did not see him do anything except stare down the place where he was going to throw. Rolovich did not do any better.

Maybe Bailey just needs to shut up, and let those guys make plays. They appear to be so worried about NOT making a mistake and getting a tongue lashing, that all they do IS make mistakes. What you focus on grows ---- Those QB's should be encouraged to go make plays, make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.

Same goes for the receivers. Jefferson looks like he's so preoccuppied with not dropping a pass, that he's not focusing on just making plays.

Montana State IS what "they" think Montana is.

Yep, the team has lost it's MOJO and CONFIDENCE. They are playing way too tense right now. Time to just let the players go out and play. The penalties need to stop, but the players should be able to go out and play loose because all this lashing is making them play like they are brittle.

right on bleedinblueandgold. Self fulfilling prophesies...maybe players don't feel the tongue lashings are worth dealing with for going "out of the box" and making plays not on the "list". Let them count on each other and the confidence will rise to the occasion...

I agree with you guys 100%. It almost seems like they're being over-coached in some respects. All the penalties, missed tackles, dropped balls, interceptions, and QB not finding his primary receivers, is a coaching problem. They look so up-tight. Affraid of making a mistake. Sounds like there needs to be an after hours staff meeting.

Here is my take. I keep hearing that the offense, (and sometimes defense) is so complex that they are having trouble "grasping", or "getting up to game speed" with it. I find it very tough to swallow that we need that complex of a system. I have talked with players that confirm that it is a very complex offense. These guys for the most part have all been playing football for at least 6 years. If you are a computer programmer with 6 years experience and switch jobs there will be a learning curve, with the change of companies, but it doesnt change the whole computer programming knowledge base that you work with everyday.

Secondly if Bailey's offense is so complex lets see it. I see nothing complex by screen passes and sending 2 of the 3 recivers on 3 yard slants and outs when it is 3rd and 8. Get down by 2 scores and then look down the feild. I would just like to see a little more creativity with the offense, hell lets see a hook and ladder of the statue of liberty 1 time every 4 or 5 years. every year we get burned by some flash for cash play but the best we ever come up with is a fake punt once a year.
