Lets simplify things a bit

Remember NDSU. They had that one running play with a lead blocker that went around the end for a ton of yards everytime?(by the way we used that play to kill the Griz last year in the 4th Qtr, but now have forgotten it)

Remember Chadron. They ran 2 misdirection plays that went for even more yds? When they didn't run it they play actioned off of it for big passes.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you don't have to have complex offense to gain yards. It is better to master a few really good plays than have a whole bunch and not be good at any.

In my mind that is the overall biggest problem with our offense. This is why we don't beat teams we should kill. This is why Ok st almost lost to us and why CU did. They should have overpowered us but instead they tried to run complicated things and couldn't. This is also why we rarely scored over 30.

Add to that:

Remember UCDavis, they ran a 5-7 yard slant route every third down and got a first down. And their running plays I think could be summed up as Run Left, Run Middle, and Run Right. Not a lot of fancy plays, but a lot of points on the board.

I also think we have to lose the reverse to Jefferson until we can sustain something else that can set it up...because defenses are waiting for it, at least it appeared that Cal Davis was!

agreed the reverse generally only works well when you have established at least some running game and can complete passes pretty well. If the defense playing the pass it can work well, but if you haven't established anything it is fairly easy to sniff out for big losses.

I honestly think this is the #1 main problem with our team right now. The D is fine, if they are only on the field for 50-60% of the time. We have talent and depth that is above average in 1-AA. Most teams in our situation would run a simplified offense and let their overall talent win game. This was best deminstrated by the Griz last year and so far this year. No one will tell you that they ran complex offense or wowed teams with creativity. They fat out won with a vanilla Offense and a solid D. They won the games they should have.

I am a little suprised that more people are not talking about this. It must be that most of you already know this, which is very possible, or your blind.

Lets get good at 5-15 plays and then add from there. We don't need 120 plays with no player being good at any. THIS IS THE PROBLEM AND THE SOLUTION Fix this and this alone and we have a good year!

Well, at this point, running a max of 15 plays can't be a negative based on last week.

I do expect the coaching cries to drop off if a 15 play offense is stuffed, but your point is well taken. Joe Gibbs ran the counter trey to 3 Super Bowls with some play-action variations.

The defense will play better. The offense will be at a stand still until Bailey changes the play calling.
