Playcalling vs ISU

Post by CelticCat » Thu Sep 30, 2004 1:16 am

I liked the playcalling vs CSU. It was greatly improved over the first two games of the season. I saw WR screens, draw plays (that for the most part worked), and lots of shifting before the snap. I love to keep a D on their toes and I think we had a good start on that vs CSU.

My question is thus: will we continue to develop in that direction, developing the passing game allowing the running game to catch the D off guard, or, in traditional Bobcat fashion, will the playcalling resume to its post-non-important-experiment game? I swear if I see much more of that run up the middle on 1st down for little or no gain crap, I'm going to ... stare at the TV with a really mean and determined look upon my face.

Seroiusly, I thought the playcalling took a huge step in the right direction last Saturday and I don't want us falling back into our typical routine.

I think if Kramer thinks we can run...he'll run! Against CSU it was looking like Cal Poly all over again with the running game and he rightly went to the air and found that the receivers had improved. It looked from then like he used the pass to set up the run.

I think that he wants to run the ball again against ISU. If he sees 8 men in the box he'll have Travis check off. ISU hasn't benn great at stopping the run, so I would say that's the first line of attack.

On the show from Old Chicago last night you could tell ISU is "His Griz game" HE really hates ISU. Probably because of his roots at Idaho, but also because they seem to be the team that has been our nemesis these past years...the reason we have gotten off to a slow start in conference. He wants them bad!

There was an article in the ISJ (Idaho State Journal) where Coach Lew closed practice to work on some plays behind closed doors. I am led to believe that we will be using a flea-flicker or some other kind of trick play that we have used countless other times.

Like another poster said, "Run, Run, Run."

Kramer remarked about the closing of the ISU practice saying that he's ready for anything from the option to the spread formation. He figures that they always come with some sort of razzle dazzle and this time will be no different. Last year he said the surprise was the using that DB as a running back.

I agree if the run can be established I look to see Milton and co. with around 35 carries today, unless, we fall behind big and have to abandon the run. Slow down the game with ball control and keep their offense off the field. However, after watching the CSU game, I have a lot more confidence in the offense to move the ball through the air now. I still wish Sullivan would be in the mix instead of Gatewood. Keys to victory: Time of possession and field position battles, turnovers, and don't allow any big plays when we are on Defense. Make them move the ball down the field with time. They have been very turnover prone (15 in 4 games) so long drives may be a challenge.
