Am I the only one who is a little uneasy about the seemingly constant stream of 1-A and JC transfers Kramer has been bringing in? We've already been docked 3 scholarships under the new NCAA rules, and now here's a guy who was academically ineligble last season at WSU who may be transferring. The 3 scholarship penalty probably isn't a huge problem, but if the number goes higher....
By the way, this is by no means intended to be a "we should recruit more Montana kids" post. I think Kramer's job is to bring in the best players he can get regardless of where they're from, but I'm just concerned about the academic side of things with the football team given the NCAA penalties we've already incurred. Maybe it's a misconception that transfers aren't as strong academically as high school players, but a check of the Big Sky All-Academic Teams from the past three years shows that only one MSU player (EJ Cochrane) on the list came to MSU as a transfer.

I agree with you, and you bring up a great point. I've noticed a bit of a trend in that direction and it worries me a bit. MSU is not an easy school by any stretch of the imagination. Having three scholarships docked is not a good thing already, but if the team keeps bringing in too many transfer guys because they can't cut it at the bigger schools, it will be a problem because most of the majors here are not easier than what you could find at a larger school. MSU still has the most all-conference Academic selections in football, but other schools are catching up. I think it's more important for these athletes to develop in the classroom and in life than just on the field. And I would hate to see the team lose more scholarships.MSU01 wrote:Am I the only one who is a little uneasy about the seemingly constant stream of 1-A and JC transfers Kramer has been bringing in? And on a semi-unrelated side thought, the NCAA should change the rule so that the scholarship money goes to academically high-achieving students instead of poorly-achieving athletes.

I haven't seen anything that says MSU lost three scholarships. I've seen where MSU would lose three if it continues to have the same grad. rate, but that it would be corrected by the end of the semester. So which is it?

From what I understand, we actually lost 3 under the NCAA rules, so it wasn't just a warning.crazycat wrote:I haven't seen anything that says MSU lost three scholarships. Read in the IR this morning that he is in fact coming this fall. I tried to find a link for the article, but it isn't one on the on-line version of IR. Bobo is mentioned as coming in with Rank and playing linebacker.
I was thinking the same thing, why another linebacker? If plays some DE I could see it. Thought we are deep at linebacker. Don't get me wrong, I welcome the kid and look forward to seeing him compete this fall. Welcome aboard Bobo and Rank.

Kramer often moves LB's to the DL. Cordero, Ross, Taylor and scores of others started off as a LB but ended up on the DL.canyoncat wrote:Read in the IR this morning that he is in fact coming this fall. I wouldn't say we're loaded at LB. We look solid with the starters, but the backups are all freshman other than Mathews(?). This is a good pickup and he played sp. teams. He can also move to DE. You can't have enough guys with this kind of versatility. His size and speed come by very rarely.

I think that LB is probably the weakest area, depth wise, on the Defense. This transfer will greatly help this out. In addition, his size and speed will make a perfect compliment for Clive Lowe, who we use as an LB/DE in the 3-4 set.
It sounds like this guy is a good pass-rusher - a definite area of weakness for us last year.

I'm super stoked about the news of these transfers. The more athletes the better and both look like they have a very good upside. The only problem is if we keep getting guys like these to come here, I have no idea how I'm gonna make it till football season. I can hardly take it. GO CATS!!!!!!!!!
