Possibility of a Blue Angel Flyover on Friday

Post by aucat » Sat Jan 10, 2026 11:23 am

At 12:30 on Friday, Jan. 16 a single Navy Blue Angel F-18 will fly over BIllings since that's the first day that the Air Show tickets for the Billings Air Show this August go on sale.

Our big celebration of course is the next day. However, it would be great if that jet could include Bozeman in its flyover as a "preliminary introduction" to the national championship celebration, especially if we knew a time that it would happen.

The colors for the Navy are blue and gold just like Montana State, and the Blue Angel jets are blue and gold.

Winning the national championship for the first time in 41 years is a huge deal for the entire state of Montana. And speaking of the number 41, rememer the extreme sacrifice made by members of the Montana State 1941 football team in World War II. I would think the Navy would want to acknowledge the military commitment by the state of Montana.

It's just a few minutes from Billings. Surely the powers to be could make this happen. I sent an email to Leon to see if he could check with the air show folks over in Billings. Anyway, it would be a nice beginning to a great weekend of celebration.

If you have never read about the sacrifice our 1941 "Golden Ghosts" football team in World War II, here is a link that provides that information.

I like the idea. I would imagine our congressional delegation has more pull than Leon on something like this.

Too slow. I've worked congressional taskers before. The athletic department knows how to get it done and who to talk with. Timing is tough though, if they are just getting started on it.

We do have a retired Blue Angel residing in Bozeman. I bet he knows the quickest path. And I would rather have a flyover Main Street during the parade. Short notice…ya think!

MSU already knows how to schedule flyovers. We’ve seen them at various games. Flyovers aren’t just calling up and asking an aircraft to fly over. There is a ground element that coordinates the action that’s involved as well.

Well they certainly do…..but your comment made me think. I don’t recall a flyover other than a Montana Air National Guard flight…and periodically with a Montana State grad in the flight crew that make an appearance on the field.

The Blue Angel flight would be a step up and is not going to happen.

But I’d take a flyover from MANG during the celebration…cool add!

I was in charge of the memorial day parade with a few others. The logistics of a flyover are extremely hard. It's about a six month to a year thing to do. Going through all the channels.

Rest In peace dad.

Not doubting you as I can’t imagine the red tape and coordination involved in something like a flyover of a multi-million dollar aircraft over top of thousands of people. That said though, there has to be something quicker at least considering they got a flyover for the semifinal game. Can’t imagine they put in all that work that far in advance for the possibility we could host a semifinal. Even still, as others have said stepping up to blue angels level is a whole other ballgame.
