Montana State @ Davis: 2024 Big Sky Conf Championship

Post by CodyCat » Sun Nov 10, 2024 7:41 am

May as well get this thread started. I watched the Davis game until halftime. Both teams looked clunky. Davis must’ve turned it on in the 2nd half. The Davis offense looks dynamic to me. But that doesn’t mean much.

Big game for the Championship!!

What will be the keys to the game?

I've watched quite a bit of UC Davis this year and I truly think that MSU is the better team by a fairly significant margin. Playing on the road narrows that of course, but I think MSU wins by 10-14 points if they don't fall behind in turnovers like they did against UNM.

Davis has good speed sideline to sideline on defense. Their linebackers played pretty well against the gritz. Tommy may need to pass a little more to open up the run game, but I like the Cats offense against that defense.

We’ll only win because of the vaunted Griz Hangover.

Larrison is going to be a handful to stop. I think the crowd kept that game closer than it should’ve been last night. When you look at Davis’ scores, they’ve had some close ones with Idaho, PSU, EWU.

Their DLine absolutely dominated the Griz OLine. Those big Days are hard to move. I think we more Tommy runs next weekend.

I don’t think Davis has a very good o line. Our D line will dominate and Hastings will make some risky throws. Our offense will dominate what they do and nobody has an answer for that this year. I couldn’t help but watch that game last night and think the Cats are up 2-3 scores on both of these teams early. Especially in that first half when it seemed both offenses were going 3 and out. Have to bring our A game but we have all year.

That’s an impressive sounding win for Davis at WGS. Not too many teams win by 16 there. However, the story I read makes it sound like UM beat itself more than anything. I didn’t watch the game so it’d be interesting to hear how it played out.

Cats need to play like they did on Saturday rather than how they did the week before.

Somewhat of a defensive battle. I fell asleep for a bit in the third but woke up and watched the rest of it. To me both defenses played well, Davis fought for everything they got, but Gris never allowed either quarterback to get in rhythm, and offense felt clunky. I do think if Fife doesn't throw the pick in the end zone early it's a very different game.

In other words I do think Davis did what they needed to do to win, but Gris certainly left plays out there.

Davis is #1 in BSC vs run at 3.6 ypc overall and 3.7 in conference games. EWU and Idaho are the top two run teams they’ve played. Idaho had 185 on 34 rushes. EWU had 34 for 81. Mixed results there. Held Cal to 102 on 38.

The Gris had a decent amount of help from the refs and the crowd. Big Sky refs are bad, but they always seem to teeter toward the Gris in WGS. The missed Gris pass interference calls come to mind right away.

And UC Davis is good. Larrison specifically is a beast. Kind of Chad Newell version of Troy Anderson.

Challenge accepted. Our offense is a well oiled machine. They will get their stops, however, we will crush their spirit.

Based only on watching yesterday's game, Davis is well rounded and good at most positions. They are disciplined on both sides of the ball and don't make big mistakes. Davis looked significantly better than the gris. Wagris effected them in the first half with lots of false starts that resulted in field goals instead of TDs. Larison is a "football playing Jesse" as Choate would say. Tough and just loves contact. Davis is good at using tempo to keep the D off balance. Plough and his staff out coached Hauck and his buddies.

Davis will be the toughest game until the playoffs by a long ways.

UC Davis reminds me of the Dakota teams. They're big and strong, don't make mistakes, nothing fancy. I think we'll find out good we really are.

just don't run at nose guard #75 @ 375....
he was slow and could not tackle, just took up space.
