Look I know it’s crazy to look into next season and speculate as injuries, portal crap, etc can happen but we can always have fun.

If we look at the real teams in the FCS (NDSU, SDSU, and MSU) it is easy to notice that all the teams’ qbs are all seniors who started for a long time. Because of this all 3 team will be forced to find a new guy. For all 3 teams the absolute leader is the QB and I think next year could get very interesting. Obviously NDSU has Payton but he is more of a runner. I’m not familiar with SDSU’s backups but I’d imagine they will need a guy to really step up. For the cats we have seen big strides from Wilson but nothing to Tommy’s level.

This leaves me wondering will all 3 pull a guy from the portal? Obviously we know a team that does that every year and we have seen significant struggles from them. Heck in 21 our transfer QB was the reason our offense was pathetic. All 3 coaches seem to be developers rather than portal reliers.

Therefore I really expect these teams to be questionable next year. I expect all 3 to have great defenses but offensively they will be missing a key player, while obviously still being able to run it. Will they try to again develop a young QB into a stud or will they plug a older guy/ portal player.

Who knows how this will all shape out but the 2025 season is going to be so different without these three quarterbacks.

Andrew Schmidt, who played for the griz and BH, has a really good thread going on Twitter about this exact thing and how something like 18/20 starting qb's to win the natty have been 2/3/and 4 year starters. And homegrown. Only like 2 have been transfer qb's.

I have a ton of friends who are huge SDSU fans and alumni. They are telling me that the QB waiting in the wings for Gronowski to graduate is going to be special.

I really like what I've seen from Chance Wilson so far, to me he'll be a very good starting QB in MSU's offense with another year to develop his skills. Vigen is loading up on high school recruits this year so once again I don't expect him to do a whole lot in the transfer portal. I'd say there's a 50/50 shot they bring in a transfer QB for next year but at least a 70/30 chance (no pun intended) that the starting QB for 2025 is already on the roster. And to me that's the best way to do it, recruit and develop instead of relying on transfer portal lottery tickets.

I think Vigen absolutely brings in another QB. I think there is a chance Reed transfers. But, even if a transfer comes in, I think you are right, Wilson will be the guy. But honestly, Im enjoying 2024 way to much to even really think about 2025.

Yeah, if Reed transfers out they almost have to bring in a more experienced guy as competition with Wilson or as a veteran backup.

That may be true, but its a common theme for fans to say exactly that. It's difficult to tell until the new guys gets some real reps with some real adversity.

I had a lot of hope for Wilson when he was recruited, As he has gotten more reps this year I think he has handled himself very well. Right now I feel pretty good about next year offensively. I would not be surprised if Reed transfers out and Vigen brings in a transfer QB for depth and competition. But over all I think that our offense looks the same with Chance behind center.

SDSU has recruited very well.

Yes I know, but recruiting and developing a QB that can play at the level of Gronowski, Miller or Mellott is not a slam dunk even for top FBS teams and coaching staffs.

As others have indicated, I expect Wilson to have the inside track to start, Reed to transfer out, and depth to transfer in.

IIRC, Wilson was one of the most highly rated recruits MSU has ever had. He's won the QB2 job as a RS Freshman. Let him continue to develop.

I'm old enough to remember when griz fans thought Kris Brown was going to blow everyone's tits off.

Absent portal we have a strong OLwith experience returning, essentially all RBs, Provience and Rohan at TE and lose 1 WR. Run game allows a QB to develop. Can you win a championship with them is a different question but should be solid. Do you roll with someone in program 3 years vs transfer learning new system?

I know he'll be a first time freshman next year, but don't count out River Warren either. He looks like he could be something special. Anyone know if he'll come in for the spring semester and take part in fall ball?

  • M. O'Reilly, LB
  • C. Bullock, LB
  • J. Johnson, CB

Potential to RS:

It's going to be an off-season of major change. Doesn't necessarily mean they won't be great in 2025. This current senior group was great immediately when they took the team lead as sophomores. It will be sad to see all these great players leave the program, but exciting to watch all the talent in the pipeline get onto the field.

Possible but unlikely IMO. He will have two sons on the team next year. I think that will keep him here for a while.
