I didn't realize that Maine's leading rusher played for Montana State last year. Jarharie Martin.

I was always surprised he didnt break through. I remember when we recruited him he was setting records in Florida for weight lifting. The guy showed up in Bozeman about as jacked as any 18 year old could. Im glad he has found a home where he can get some playing time.

If I'm remembering correctly he was originally recruited as a linebacker and then switched over to running back while Choate was still the coach. This is a case in which transferring was likely a good idea because I think he would be buried pretty deep on MSU's depth chart at running back.

Two years ago, he didn’t play at MSU last season.

He should have played LB, it literally always shocked me that wasn't the obvious position for him

Too slow.

Yeah I thought he was going to be a big time player when we got him. That recruiting visit picture of him shirtless with Denarius blew my mind how developed he was in high school.
I think he didn’t have the length and/or speed to be a linebacker in a 3-4 scheme in college. If we were a 4-3 he might have been a good fit at middle line backer, but even there pass defense might have been a liability.
Still bummed he transferred though. As a blocker at fullback he was a beast. My favorite being his block on two South Dakota State linebackers on the same play as I believe Tommy ran in for a touchdown in the South endzone

It would have been cool if Martin would have stayed and played some FB for us, but I think it's telling that the leading rusher for Maine would have been #6 or #7 in line had he stayed at MSU.

He should have been linebacker or DE. And he wasn’t to slow. Hell, we could have tried him a kicker as well.

I think he would have been a great FB for us. His lead block on
Tommy's 2nd quarter go ahead TD run against SDSU in 2021 is still one of my all time favorite moments I have seen live. It's kind of ironic that the guy that we brought in to replaced Derryk Snell played for Maine last year since I think Martin would have been that guy for us if he stayed.

Even stranger is Rohan Jones transferred from Maine after playing with Jaharie last year. I am guessing the two had to have talked about MSU.

They were together for a semester. Rohan talks about it in the player interview this week. That interview is on the depth chart thread. I don't believe Jaharie ended up playing last season. Not sure why.

Jaharie said in an interview this week that part of his decision to go to Maine was because they played at Montana State, he is definitely out to prove that he should have been used more at MSU.

Definitely has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He was quite the dude, But was easy for opposing players to get in his head during the game. Hopefully he’s matured and is becoming the player he’s capable of being.

Sounds good, but he didn’t have a lot of other offers. Here is the interview.

Thanks, AFcat, like the commentator says a chip on his shoulder!
I don’t think he ever turned that corner when he was at Montana State. Like I said, hopefully he figures it out.

Well it worked out for us, as we took away a physical and productive player of theirs. Martin had a few decent blocks and also if I recall a few unnecessary personal fouls on kick offs. Good choice for him to transfer as he’d be fairly low on the RB chopping block.
