That was interesting. He mentioned special teams as a reason we struggled last year, but did not mention our defense which seemed to disappear at the most inopportune times.

Calling out questionable play calling too. That’s the hardest pill to swallow from last season. Despite our potent offense, flat out destroying teams at will….we soil our pants against Idaho and montana.

Kicking, Defense, and confused coaching collided at the end of the year and was exposed by depth issues due to injuries. We’re still a team at the top but shoring up these areas will be our early litmus test next season.

The 2023 season will be talked about for a long time due to the missed opportunities MSU had, but ultimately it was proven that SDSU was clearly the best team by the end of the season and they would have won the National Championship regardless of opponent. MSU definitely knows what it has to improve on for 2024, sometimes adversity can lead to very good things in the following season if the team works just that tiny bit harder to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Pretty much the same things need to be improved upon. Either the offense gets more diverse or the defense takes a step forward. Big difference is the defense going into 24 looks like it’s in better shape than the defense going into 23.
Last year I thought the best chance to improve was the pass game but the defense was surprisingly improved until injuries caused a lack of depth and the pass defense didn’t hold up over a long stretch late in the year (got better vs NDSU).
If Reed is the clear #2, then MSU should shift its offense even more toward the air.
It seemed Johnson was really working on pass protection last year and it improved. So that might play into how the offense develops.
MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

All that article does is piss me off. Ha
Maybe the highest rated offense in FCS history and they go 8-4, lose to griz, first round exit at home……. Now I’m Angry again.

Of the top 6 teams, 4 lost to NDSU to end their seasons. The other two were NDSU teams.

I don’t know what the methodology was for this but I’m sensing it didn’t factor in fully the ability to make plays in critical situations, which is difficult to do. I don’t think the 2023 MSU offense was the best offense in the last 15 years. I don’t think it was the best last year. MSU made too many mistakes in critical moments. Penalties and dropped passes, especially.CodyCat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 20, 2024 12:25 pmAgreed! Yeah it just never felt like this was an all-time offense. Maybe because in the bigger games, it was just OK at best (with the exception being the NDSU game). It just seemed like a Rob Ash season, beating up on bad to average teams, then not being able to perform at that level against the good teams. I realize SDSU and NDSU were good performances, but they couldn't get it done. Idaho and UM were absolute turds. So yeah, if you could take out those two games, this offense has stats that would blow your mind. But you can't. Those games count and kind of ruined the season.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 4:17 pmI don’t know what the methodology was for this but I’m sensing it didn’t factor in fully the ability to make plays in critical situations, which is difficult to do. Re: FCS-Top-15 Offenses In The Past 15 Seasons (2009-23)
Rob Ash never had a team that good. Those teams primarily got smoked by good teams, barely beat lots of better than average teams. Not bashing Ash, just would never put the 23 team in that category. Aside from the UM loss MSU somehow managed to lose the other three. Ash teams mostly got smoked by teams like those three.kennethnoisewater wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2024 10:04 amYeah it just never felt like this was an all-time offense. But Ash was able to win three Big Sky titles in four years. I don't care what anyone says, that is pretty impressive and something that can't ever be taken away.
Great time to be a BOBCAT!
