Coldest Game?

Post by kwcat » Fri Jan 12, 2024 10:05 am

I thought it might be fun, with the cold front coming into Montana, to talk about the coldest games you’ve played in or been to either at Bobcat Stadium or on the road.

As I am just taking a break from work I will have to do some research. A handful of games come to mind. I’ll mention them later hopefully some of you can kick off the discussion.

I know when Game Day was in Bozeman. We started tailgating when they let us set up at 5 o’clock. It was around zero. But plunged around sun up to something like 17 below and then warmed up towards kick off time.

A recent one would be last years semi-final in Brookings.

The Furman playoff game in 2006(?) was pretty cold......there was wind and the north end zone open aluminum bleachers were not heated :D

Two others that come to mind were the 2 home playoff games in 1984 vs Arkansas State and Rhode Island.

I made the road trip to Brookings and had to shovel our way through quite a few secondary bridges along the way. 23 hours of drive time. I was also on the MSU sidelines during that game it was cold but the wind was absolutely unforgiving coming straight out of the north down the visiting sidelines.

NDSU playoff game in 2010 was incredibly cold, not sure where it ranks with some of these others though.

My wife and I went to Chicago for the Packers Bears game in 2016. Rodgers to Nelson set up a Crosby FG to win it. It was the 4th coldest game in Soldier Field history at -11 F. Windchill off the lake was awful that day. Wife used the adhesive toe warmers stuck all over her base layer to stay warm.

I was at both of those 1984 games and the Arkansas State game high temp that day was around 30 degrees with a low around 10. Game time temps were probably in the upper 20s. The next week against Rhode Island was about the same. High temps were in the mid 30s and lows down near 0 degrees. If you watch the game video on Youtube, you can see people dressed in shirts and light weight jackets. I know I had my lined, heavy wool Swiss military pants on. I still have them. The sun was out against Rhode Island that day too.

The playoff game against William and Mary in 2022 had temps down in the teens and it was at night. I still felt comfortable though since the wind wasn't blowing and it was a fun game to watch.

I think it has to be the 2010 Cat/Griz game or the 2014 South Dakota State playoff game in Bozeman.

Wasn't the night game against Sam Houston really cold? That one always stands out to me personally.

I'm guessing the far more dramatic stories will come from the shady side of the stadium. It's like the dark side of the moon over there.

Perfect place for visiting teams in November and December.

I thought the W&M game set record for the coldest game at Bobcat Stadium? Or maybe coldest home playoff game?

There is no cold weather, just inappropriate attire.

There was a Cat griz game in Bozeman in the late 80s (87 or 89 probably) that was below zero. That mightve been with wind chill but it was frigid. I remember the score was 8-2 griz at one point but I think the final was a little higher.
Does anyone else recall that game?

Edit- it was 1989, final was 17-2

I was at that game as a UM frosh visiting HS friends at MSU. We left at halftime and watched the second half in South Hedges. I was still a Bobcat fan even though I was at UM and there was just no path to victory so we walked. Transferred Fall 1990 and had a front row view to The Streak.

The Sam Houston night playoff game was 5 degrees at kickoff.

In 2003 we had back to back home games (Sac State and the griz) that were at 5 degrees.

The playoff game at NDSU in 1976 was very cold and windy.

Sam Houston was cold. 2013(?) Griz game was cold. Remember a bunch of people hiding in the bathroom to warm up.

Coldest one I remember was like 2004 or something home against Weber with snow blowing sideways and us getting or ass kicked. Probably the only game I ever chose to leave early...

My Mom talks about that game. She said by the end of the game, there were just a few fans left in the stands and they were all huddled together.

I thought that Cat-gris game in 2003 was below zero. Was that just one of those days that was warmer by the time the game started and Corey Smith ran the opening kickoff back? I had a lot of whiskey in me that day.
