Cats Offense This Season

Why is it that our run game is not as effective as it was last season?
With the returning personnel we have, I would have thought we would have picked up where we left off.
I also have noticed a significant change in play calling. Towards the end of the season, teams had no answer for our muti threat offense.
Our play calling was so dynamic. Every play could be a run from the RB, a QB RUN, QB RUN AND THEN PASS LATE, WR RUN, ETC.
Why has our play calling become so vanilla and predictable? We have the weapons but have totally abandoned the dynamic play calling to keep the defenses on their heels.
Will we bring this style back? Why would we stop using what was working so well?

We are leading the nation in rushing?

You don't show all your plays when you are playing Utah Tech and Stetson

I haven’t been a fan of our offense this year either. I suspect they were holding back for conference. The plus one run game is getting our qbs hurt too often.

The odd thing about our +1 run game this year is how we've been running it. Last year we usually ran behind a RB and at least 1 TE off tackle. This year it's been all up the middle.

Today will answer some questions I have about Housewright . Hope we play well
I was disappointed with our play calling in South Dakota. I agree with other posters nothing to gain from Stetson or Utah Tech

Sure, the Cats are piling up yards, but they’re not doing it they way I want!!
Look. We’ve played two crappy opponents and a game against an excellent team where the coaches decided the best strategy was ball control and being conservative. I don’t think these first three games are exactly a great barometer for what, and how, the offense is going to play this year.

Exactly, and by a pretty wide margin too. In terms of rushing yards/game the difference between #1 (MSU) and #2 (NDSU) is the same as the difference between #2 and #9!

I can see holding your cards to your chest vs 2 crappy teams, but why would you do that vs SDSU. Why would we not bring it all vs the #1 team in the nation?
We may be #1 in the nation in rushing, but it just doesn't seem like we are as fluid and effective as last year

Need to compare same point in season. We were not smooth or diverse early then either. Does seem like we could be with consistency on oline, QB, but some new RB and WR might play into it a little.
While nice to beat SDSU need to win tough road games in conference more.

Disagree. Beat SDSU on the road & Cats are in the drivers seat for a #1/2 seed.

Not if you don't win the conference

I’m doing math in my head while looking at box scores on my phone, but I’ve got 182 rushes for 1310 yards on the ground so far this season. 7.2 YPC, 328 YPG.

I do appreciate a totally different game plan and offensive format! Under center, I-formation with a ton of play action and bootlegs. I thought I was watching the 1998 Bobcats, not the 2023 Bobcats! As much as many of us have complained about vanilla or redundant offensive playcalls this season, I appreciate a completely different approach and game plan. Also gives future opponents something completely different that they now have to game plan for...

The coaches built a game plan for SDSU that they thought was the best way to win. I don't think they were holding their cards. It worked for 58 minutes and 30 seconds. It may have worked had it not been for what appears to be a bad call on a review.
As for the run game, the other teams know what MSU wants to do so they do things to throw it off. They have had some success so far, but MSU has responded well with the exception of the SDSU game but that was more due to SDSU's great defense. MSU will continue to do things to offset defenses overplaying certain areas and I think it will continue to smooth out as the season goes on. I think that's exactly what you saw vs Weber. I don't think MSU was running its first five plays just to move downfield, they did that bait the defense. (Like basketball when teams establish an inside presence and then start kicking the ball outside to open jumpers and lanes) It worked. Chambers hit a bunch of passes (4-5 start) and that opened everything up and the run game cruised after that. It's always a chess match for MSU's run game and they're not playing the Washington Generals. Weber's defense is good and even though they got beat by 40 points they have some good stretches against MSU's run game. MSU was just too much to handle once it started passing and got WSU confused.

Hey Tom. Do you still think opposing teams have figured out MSU’s run game? Which, btw, is #1 in the FCS.

Is it no. 1 in the FCS?
And, yes, opposing teams have figured out MSU’s run game Did you not know that?

I agree with you Tom, opposing teams have figured out MSU's run game, but what they have figured out is: THEY CAN'T STOP IT.
