This is something we all know as MSU supporters, but it is nice to see it from a Griz fan. George Ferguson has always been a fair reporter and calls it like he sees it.

WOW!!! That's a great article and had to be a little hard to write. But he's totally on track, MSU is leaps and bounds ahead of um, in every facet. Again, Wow.

There have been many articles over the years about how much enrollment applications increase after a major national event (NCAA Basketball and Football). It's documented that there is a significant increase in interest in an institution after a good showing. I wonder if the increased attention on MSU (and UM) on Game Day will increase out of state interest in attending? I'd sure like to see some numbers if/when they are compiled.

Colter's recent podcast basically said the same thing. Wahlberg's Gris fan pod basically said the same thing. It's interesting that Gris fans are finally coming to the realization that little brother hasn't been little brother for a long time.

They dominated the leather helmet era when Montana State College was an NAIA school and they'll never let us forget it. =D^
My concern is that the legislature and the Board of Regents will try to punish MSU for its success instead of trying to raise the level of um to somewhat what MSU is now.

We're one stadium addition away from passing them in capacity...if we want to.

And to take it even further than right now, that enrollment growth is a slow burn that pushes the smaller school even deeper into irrelevance. When you have twice the alums (especially ones getting generally higher-earning jobs), those turn into fans that buy tickets, then fans that buy season tickets, then fans that contribute to the program and the university. MSU is doing what it's doing as my generation (I'm 45) is getting to the age where we can start contributing financially a little bit, but we were terrible back then and there weren't many fans. Fast forward 25 years and there will be twice as many alums, and ones who have always been better fans than the majority of the students when I was in school. This is a big snowball that's rolling down hill and is just starting.

Another interesting factor. In 1990 in the midst of the streak, Gallatin County had 28,000 fewer people than Missoula County. Today, Gallatin County's population is larger than Missoula County's (both counties have grown a lot in the time period). That doesn't always correlate to fan support, but it doesn't hurt either. Seeing MSU cram 22,000 into our listed capacity 17,777 seat stadium shows the potential we have if more seats get built.

The key is don't rest on our laurels like we did in the late 70's through the 80's until the Mike Malone era. We can go backwards real quick if we do.

If you really want to understand how much MSU is in front of UM in every facet, find MSU students from Missoula and ask why they chose MSU.

I grew up in Missoula in a Griz family, and my dad is a die-hard Griz fan. He even said when we came down for an MSU Friday in high school that MSU is miles ahead of UM, and that given the choice now he would go to MSU. That's damning.

When I was in high school, I could not escape the amount of marketing materials MSU was sending me. UM did not contact me in any way until the week before I moved to Bozeman.

It's honestly embarrassing on UM's part how far they have fallen behind in every conceivable way over the past decade. While MSU is building new dorms, UM is converting theirs into office buildings, which says everything you need to know about these two schools recently

In 2019, I was sitting in my season ticket seats in the East grandstands awaiting the start of the game. There was a father and daughter sitting behind me that I had never seen before, so I struck up a conversation with them. I thought they may have been fans of the opposing team. Anyway, it turned out they were from California and they were scoping out colleges for the daughter to attend. The father started asking me questions about um and MSU and the local area. They were from a rural area in California and just loved MSU. The father told me that his daughter had contacted um about attending there but never heard back from them. When she contacted MSU, they responded immediately, that’s why they were in Bozeman and not Missoula.

Wait wait wait. They had a net increase this year of like 200 students! The GE guy running their school has succeeded and has the free fall contained!

I totally kid. Dumb hire and in year whatever we're in it still looks dumb.

Why? They should have tons of capacity with the huge net loss they've had.

It is a "special" dorm for liberal arts majors. Padded walls, no corners or straight lines, (oops, I couldn't find a different word for straight), one one floor with extra windows in each room at least 8' above the ground. Pot smokers only. RA's name is Mr. Karen.

I have no idea. I saw the um request alongside the MSU request to build another new dorm and the indoor practice facility.

Bobby Hauck and the Griz fan base constantly citing the lopsided record in the rivalry is so metaphorical of how UM compares to MSU. They completley hang their hat on past accomplishments, while completely ignoring what's happening in the present; or modern era. Since 2000, Cat/Griz is virtually even; a TRUE rivalry.

MSU is definitely the firebrand right now. I hope the powers that be take advantage of it.

Heck it’s dang near even since 1963. I think 31-27 griz. My god, if I were them I would start worrying about the damn future because it’s looking bleak.
