That doesn’t change the fact that it is true. For me anyway.

Re: Bozeman and the football program
This thread is getting a little off track. The question is will or how the changes in Bozeman will impact the football program and MSU?

Re: Bozeman and the football program
I think MSU will always be able to pull in good coaches as long as leadership is strong and we are seen as a good career investment (good teams, good opportunities when leaving). The issue is that I don't see any assistants that don't have an existing connection to MSU/Bozeman/Montana sticking around for more than two years simply because they can't afford it. They'll put their time in, raise their profile and leave.
As far as players go I think a smart real estate company would start an NIL deal and provide free (or greatly reduced) housing. Also, FCOA becomes even more important in a place like Bozeman. It's kind of been forgotten in the whole NIL discussion but it's still something the school should work towards.

Re: Bozeman and the football program
I've wondered why MSU doesnt build/purchase condos for the assistant coaches. Charge a greatly reduced rate and maybe be able to keep some coaches a little longer.coloradocat wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 11:53 amI think MSU will always be able to pull in good coaches as long as leadership is strong and we are seen as a good career investment (good teams, good opportunities when leaving). Re: Bozeman and the football program
I imagine it starts with nobody in leadership never considering the possibility. If the idea ever came up it would probably be shot down because of a) $$$ and b) it's not the university's job to find places for employees to live. Those are both reasonable reasons not to do it. Combine that with the culture of assistant coaches doing their job "for the love of the game, not the money" and the fact that it's still not that hard to find a couple new position coaches every year. Until enough coaches actually say they can't afford to live in Bozeman during exit interviews and we have trouble filling positions I don't things will change. It would be better for MSU to get out in front of the issue but I don't see it happening unless it's 100% funded through donations (and there are already enough projects that are higher priority).CodyCat wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 11:56 amI've wondered why MSU doesnt build/purchase condos for the assistant coaches. Re: Bozeman and the football program
It would also be a very tough sell to the MSU community as a whole to give assistant coaches cheap housing while there are undoubtedly many many maintenance workers, receptionists, librarians, junior faculty members, etc. who are employed by MSU and also struggling to afford Bozeman's cost of living. Assistant coaching turnover is simply a fact of college athletics - just look at Jeff Choate's resume. That's the norm and not the exception. Hire the best coaches you can find and repeat the process if they leave after a couple years.coloradocat wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 12:17 pmI imagine it starts with nobody in leadership never considering the possibility. Re: Bozeman and the football program
It is my understanding that, if an employer provides housing at a below market rate, the difference is considered taxable. The break in rent would be offset somewhat by taxes....if this is accurate. The accountants will correct me if not.coloradocat wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 12:17 pmI imagine it starts with nobody in leadership never considering the possibility. The football coaches at University of Wyoming have free housing. The head coaches house is damn nice. A friend of mine who coached there said that was the best part of Laramie.

Re: Bozeman and the football program
It is not only coaches housing. How about players that want to stay for the Summer workouts. Even getting new recruits to come to school in Bozeman. Families of players affording the high hotel rates. Also, fans affording the high hotel rates coming to Bozeman for weekend games. And, the impact of HS players attending Summer camps at MSU.

Re: Bozeman and the football program
Big Sky has for many years been not only a national but an international destination location. Many of the individuals who fly in and out of Montana's busiest airport daily are among this countries most wealthy and powerful rivaled only by those in Jackson, Wyoming.
The leadership of our college has been working with many of these individuals and will continue to work with them to great success, unimaginable to many of us who were raised in the Gallatin Valley 50 to 60 years ago. Many of us remember when the field house opened. Dr. Cruzado has restored our state's flagship institution to it's rightful place after just a few down years.
Dr. Cruzado will not tolerate anyone on her staff who will not support her vision for continued success and growth.
A few worthwhile articles explaining the condition of collegiate sports salaries are worth reading to include this

Re: Bozeman and the football program
If players are off campus they are already paying for summer or losing the lease. Is MSU able to use a dorm for summer athletes

Re: Bozeman and the football program
I believe there is a specific dorm used for summer students (possibly more than one at this point). A lot of work goes into managing the dorms and using them in the summer also delays/eliminates repairs and maintenance. It might be cheaper to just build a summer housing allowance into a scholarship program for that period.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Among countless life choices, they have chosen to be students at UM. This makes the university responsible for their housing needs, how?

Funniest thing about that article is the mention of increasing enrollment, lol. Before I get bashed by Griz fans, yes I know it’s growing, but not by much.

This would be a step in the right direction for current and future players. If you are being recruited and you do your homework and you look at the cost of rent in Bozeman you might think otherwise. I believe NDSU does this for their players.

Not to mention the fact that this “increasing enrollment” is no where near equaling what they have lost over the past decade.

We focus on football here, but will these rent prices slow overall enrollment growth, which impacts the university and ability to support all sports.

That's the result of socialist indoctrination that has seeped into basically everything. It seems the majority of the younger generations feel the world owes them something. Add in the current enabling government that's furthering their socialist agenda and it's no wonder. It's a sorry spot we are in as a country right now.Bobcat4Ever wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 11:29 pmAmong countless life choices, they have chosen to be students at UM.
