Re: Bozeman and the football program
Breaking news — older person agrees with other older person. Looking to the near future, UM will be made aware that housing is only one item and that they are falling behind in supplying their students’ needs for catered meals, utilities, medical and mental care, local and long distance transportation, laundry, and an entertainment stipend. It’s no more silly than the housing demands.
The universities, as far as impact to students is concerned, really do need to look at themselves for taking so much student money (for tuition and student-assessed fees) that there may not be enough left for housing. Athletes, at least full-rides, are in a much better place than the typical pay-on-your-own student or a preferred walk-on.
Please stop and think with me a minute — in the 40+ years between my graduating from college and retiring, big-ticket items that I can remember went up 10 to 12 times in cost. My final pay was almost exactly 10 times my starting salary. My vehicle was about 12 times the cost of my first new one. My home sold for exactly 10 times the initial cost 38 years earlier. College tuition??? I don’t know but I paid around $160 per quarter (480/year) in-state at MSU and I’ll bet tuition is more than 10 times that now? Students also need to think about all of the fancy facilities they have voted fees for.
How does the cost of rentals multiplier stack up? Can someone share that? My point is, with only a proportional increase for college expenses over the years, basic student rentals may not look quite so daunting.

Students in Missoula protesting something may be terribly on brand but it's hard to blame them in this situation. College is at least as much about an "experience" as it is about education. Most students don't really get their money's worth any more regardless of what degree they get or how their career turns out. College life is much nicer than it was when any of us attended but I doubt the amount of knowledge gained or the career prospects have kept pace with the price inflation. For what students are paying these days I have no problem with them demanding everything be taken care of.Bobcat4Ever wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 11:06 pmBreaking news — older person agrees with other older person. When I was a Freshman at MSU back in 76, it was record employment at the time and my dorm room was not available so they put me into the “library” with about 10 other men in Hannan Hall for 3 months. A room opened up in Mullen but it was a single. I took it, regardless of the price and I was on everyone’s “list” because “Freshmen never get singles”…! Lemons turned into lemonade.
I was paying record tuition and rent at the time…but now, it was priceless!

Nobody is making these kids go to UM. If they don’t like the options, go to a different school. And didn’t they realize what they were getting with housing before they enrolled? I could tell you that UM housing sucked and my experience was from 35 years ago!CelticCat wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 10:33 pmBreaking news - older person thinks younger people are entitled.grizzh8r wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 8:32 pmThat's the result of socialist indoctrination that has seeped into basically everything. I know, I'm not even arguing. Just always find it amusing when anyone pretty much says any variation of "kids today", like every generation has said about the next since the dawn of time.

Saw that complaint coming a mile away!Breaking news - older person thinks younger people are entitled.
I wonder if these old people put their grandkids in the entitled camp, or if it is just other people's grandkids!

Pretty sure Biden is the catch all. Can you believe he can't even keep us stocked up on baby formula! I can't quite figure out how to respond to this without violating the board rules. So because of that, I'll just say.....grizzh8r wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 8:32 pmThat's the result of socialist indoctrination that has seeped into basically everything. Re: Bozeman and the football program
I wasn’t going to comment on this but I just watched a Biden press conference on this baby formula shortage. Biden was asked why this shortage wasn’t identified earlier and he responded “maybe if they were better mind readers”! That is a f@cking embarrassment of an answer. His administration wouldn’t be such an joke and failure if the guy was halfway prepared to answer such an answer. How about something like “our dependence on Chinese manufacturers has spilled over into such necessary goods as baby formula. The Covid impact on manufacturing coupled with international tension has created such shortage concerns”. But instead he says “maybe if we were better mind readers”. It doesn’t matter if you are a Republican or Democrat - you should be disturbed at the lack of intellect with Biden.luckyirishguy25 wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 11:16 amPretty sure Biden is the catch all. Re: Bozeman and the football program
Absurdly, provisions were added to the United States‐Mexico‐Canada Agreement (USMCA) to restrict imports of formula from Canada, supposedly because China was investing in a baby food plant in Ontario, and this new production might eventually enter the U.S. market (heaven forbid!). Thus, the provisions in the USMCA’s agriculture annex establish confusing and costly TRQs on Canadian exports of infant formula, and the United States imported no baby formula from Canada in 2021.

I think blaming Biden for a formula shortage is, and extremely ignorant.Rich K wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 12:02 pmApparently you think a formula shortage is funnyluckyirishguy25 wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 11:16 amPretty sure Biden is the catch all. Yeah…. Trump had a lot to do with Biden being so lost in answering simple questions posed by a reporter. I guess Biden should have been a mind reader to see this coming.
