Re: 125 All Time Greats
That's quite an undertaking, and one I hope the athletic department is able to see through to completion. 125 articles, no matter how short, will be a lot of work, but it sounds like it's being taken very seriously by a group of people. Also, pretty cool that Mike Kramer is contributing to the selection of the team. I look forward to reading them!

Re: 125 All Time Greats
Reno Sales is just flat-out among the greatest Bobcats of all-time in almost any category.
Among his many contributions was cleaning up the mess left after the "Stadium For State" financial drive crashed in the late 60's. Have no reason, other than my own, to believe it's why the AD at the time moved on and accepted the same job at Fresno State, certainly not an upgrade at the time.
Mr. Sales (as I prefer to call him) took out his checkbook and wrote a check for $500,000, about $3.5 million today, to get the construction plan back on track, resulting in one of the best Division II football facilities in the nation at the time. No small coincidence it helped propel the Bobcats to the 1976 National Championship. I'm one of many who believes his name should never have been taken off that stadium! I would love to see the new plaza to be built connecting Bobcat Stadium to adjacent structures and parking be named Reno Sales Plaza. He's earned at least that!

Re: 125 All Time Greats
Bill Lamberty is doing the series.
He has it handled. He’s been working on this for years, I suspect.
Thanks Bill. Great work.

I propose the new indoor facility be named Gatton-Sales indoor training facility. Outside the front door of the facility have statues dedicated to both men.FYI wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 3:55 pmReno Sales is just flat-out among the greatest Bobcats of all-time in almost any category.

Wow! Will Flaherty was Marje Paisley's father? Fitting progenitor to Mrs. Paisley who should be among the top Bobcats ever, athlete or otherwise.

Re: 125 All Time Greats
It's interesting how the All Time Greats list is going to be developed. For instance, the Bobcat football team went, for the most part, both ways until the last game of the 1965 season. Coach Sweeney, in a surprise move at the Monday team meeting, made the announcement and posted the list showing the unit players reported to on the practice field. Seemed like a bold move, but the Cats were among the last to split the squad.
Didn't work out very well, the Cats lost the final game to Idaho 54-0. I said all that to say I noted John Monk listed on one of the Billings paper's at guard. This would have been a couple of seasons before the split. Monk was an even better middle linebacker. Wonder if/how something like that will get worked out. I might have some arguments with this, but Sonny Holland was perhaps a better middle line backer than center and I can't think of a center better than him. I was looking on Youtube for highlights of the 1959 East-West Shrine game in San Francisco when that game had the finest college football talent in the nation. Can't find it anywhere. He pulled and threw a downfield body block that wowed the nation. That was when it was still legal to leave your feet.

Leon is a great guy. Always enjoyed being around him and his ridiculously crooked fingers growing up His son Sean was one of Oregon's first baseball recruits when they restarted their program in the late 2000s.
