2022 transfer portal tracker

Post by mslacatfan » Sun Jan 09, 2022 1:03 pm

For better or worse, this has now become a major part of the offseason in college football. Especially the fcs level. Thought I would keep a tracker going of every player that is joining or leaving the program.

New arrivals:
-Dru Polidore, DB from Air Force (former 3 star recruit, 4 years left to play)
-Sean Chambers, QB from Wyoming (former 3 star recruit, 2 years left to play)
-Ravi Alston, WR from Div 3 Saint Johns (1 year left to play)
-Omarrian Aigbedion, OL from Army (4 years left to play)
-Kaegun Williams, RB from SDSU (grad transfer, 1 year left, former 3 star recruit)
-Malik Mullins, WR from Independence CC (3 years left)
-Clevan Thomas, WR from Kentucky (1 year left, former 3 star)
-Rhedi Short, S from Arizona (1 year left)

Departures:
-Mathew McKay, QB signed with Elon
-Luke Pawlak, Kicker signed with U of Toledo
-Casey Bauman, QB signed with Augustans University DII
-Cole Snyder, OL signed with Delaware
-Charles Brown, WR signed with Texas State
-Jaden Smith, WR signed with Tarleton
-TJ Session, OL signed with Cal
-Demarius Hosey, RB signed with Texas A&M Commerce
-Jamahd Monroe, WR signed with...
-Andrew Patterson, WR signed with…

With the Transfer Portal, the top 12 -16 FCS teams will be attractive to players looking for playing time with a good program. Luckily, UM and MSU are in this elite level.
Conversely, the FCS can end up being a farm league for the FBS.
It will be interesting to see how FCS teams can intelligently navigate this situation.
Can FCS coaches approach FBS player who want to get exposure and playing time?

Hoping to see some names start popping up. We could use a couple drop downs with size and experience. Hopefully some tweeners were watching and contacting coaches.

I would imagine at least 2 or 3 DL will be coming in. Possibly an OL or 2 and a Safety. At a minimum.

If there happens to be a Tre Webb 2.0 out there, that would be just super.

Also OL & DL... we lose some big time seniors. (I really like the guys coming back though)

Maybe a proven RB to push that room, and provide depth.

Is Byron Rollins brother ready to transfer to MSU yet?

Positions that are looking pretty solid at this point- LB, CB, QB, kicker, punter, TE...

Maybe another solid WR would be good...

I think Webbs replacement is already on the team and got significant playing time. I think Ortt plays SS next year. Some depth would be good though.

I think our WR room is pretty solid but I have no doubt there’s search for a grad transfer bigger body to replace Stewart. I think the Smith/Gardner/WP/Dowler/Patterson rotation is still pretty talented, just pretty raw overall and undersized

I think Pickering, Snell, and Lonergan need to fill that gap. We saw flashes early and late this season that they would get more involved and I want to see the next step. Works pretty well for MVC teams it seems.

I loved the play where Tommy starts to run and then just before reaching the line of scrimmage throws it to the TE. Seems like the perfect play for his style.

Seems like we could use a big body athletic defensive tackle like Benson.

Everyone is going to the portal to find big offensive and defensive linemen. Heck, Missouri grabbed Woody from the Cats. Those quality bigs are a premium and they are not going to be that easy to find. If anything, the Cats are more likely to get junior college transfers.

The Cats just got a quarterback out of the portal who has a history of significant injuries. I hope for super high quality transfers coming in but it’s not going to be easy getting them.

Is there even a breakdown of what positions are prevalent in the portal?

I am no expert in the Transfer Portal. So, I googled it. 247 Sports came up with the only list of players I could find. I went through QBs and Matt McKay is not listed anywhere. Does this mean he has pulled his name from the Portal and is no longer pursuing football?

It looks like 247Sports might be only reporting FBS entries.

They did list the kid from Incarnate Word going to WSU. But maybe they are only listing FBS signees.

Not sure I agree with a deep WR room. In my opinion, if we were deep, we would’ve seen more receptions from guys. Not knowing the exact numbers but I’d be shocked if after McCutcheon, there was anyone with 25+ receptions. Not trying to pick on anyone in particular but McCutcheon was ‘the’ go to guy all season. Others were capable but the QBs favored 86. Was it because they trusted him or did he get open more or did he fight harder for balls in flight? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

Again, not knowing numbers, I’d bet 86 had 65%+ of the receptions? Can someone verify or deny, honestly?

I agree and I'd bet that 65% is a low percentage, especially if we're only talking WRs.
