Who Gets In

Post by Marana CAT » Wed Oct 20, 2021 1:57 pm

If Weber State (would have to beat EWU) and the Griz (would lose to Idaho) both finish at 7-4 do they both get in the playoffs as the 5th and 6th BSC teams if below scenario plays out. Or just one?
Possible finish of the top 4 BSC teams:
1. Cats 10-1 (8-0 conference)
2. EWU 9-2 (6-2 conference)
3. UC Davis 9-2 (6-2 conference)
4. Sac State 8-3 (7-1 conference)

No. Zero chance they get in under that scenario. I suppose there's a SLIGHT chance Weber would get in as the 5th but that would require several top 20 teams to meld down the stretch.

Really? I think a Weber team at 7-4 with a win in cheney would get in easy.

A 7-4 griz team with a win at UW would have as good an argument too.

But I dont think we'll need to worry about this scenario. I think the griz win out until Cat/griz and would get in over Weber even if they beat EWU this weekend. But I dont see that either, Weber's D will hang in there but even if they hold EWU to say 24-28 points, their offense can't score that many.
Griz finish 8-3 and get in
Weebs finishes 6-5 and doesn't.

Yes they would. The committee actually uses how you are playing currently and if Weber wins out they would have won 5 straight with a quality win @ EWU. BSC gets 5 teams in frequently since the expansion, heck we had 4 seeds in 2019.

griz would be 4 - 4 after starting 3-0 but the committee has a hard on for um (them still getting a seed at 8-3 after we waxed em in 2019 is prime example) and they might sneak in if things fell their way. They would need help though.

U of Washington is a joke. EWU would have beat UW by 30 points had they played them when UM did. No matter what happens, EWU will finish ranked and most likely in the top 10. At 7-4, WSU would get in before UM. Other then UW, Griz schedule is a pathetic.

EWU Sac State & MSU plus the FCS play up game? Thats likely to be 3 playoff teams

MSU is only playing Weber, EWU & the Griz. Only 2 playoff teams (assuming the Griz don't drop another)

EWU plays Weber, Davis, UM and UM (Weber, Davis, and MSU as consecutive games)

Weber plays MSU, Davis, EWU. (Credit where credit is due, they played JMU in the non-conference)

Davis plays EWU, Weber, and Sac

Sac only plays UM & Davis. (but they played Cal & UNI)

Sac has the easiest schedule, followed by the Cats, then Davis (Davis & the Cats are really close, you could flip those) then UM, then Weber.

I don't usually say nice things about the Griz, but I don't think we as Cat fans should be poking fun at the strength of anyones schedule.

I think the biggest wildcard is the #6-7 teams in the MVFC & the #3-4 teams in the CAA...Do Rhode Island & Delaware finish strong? Does a 7-4 Northern Iowa squeak in? Maybe Kennesaw St drops to Monmouth & the Big South gets 2 qualifiers. Is Weber or UM impressive down the stretch or do they squeak out wins against mediocre teams

There are just a ton of wildcards. A 7-4 record doesn't assure a playoff spot for anyone.

So the griz play 3 playoff teams. They have lost 2 and will have lost all 3 of those games by the end of the season.

Maybe I'm wrong, who knows... and as somebody pointed out - it's probably not going to play out that way anyway. My thinking was, that Weber is not ever on the top 25 currently so I rules them out. Also looking at UM, I just think it would be ridiculous to take a 5th or 6th team when we'd already have four teams locked in from the Big Sky, what that team has FOUR LEAGUE LOSSES.

Something to consider - EWU opponent records as of today:

UNLV 0-6
Cent Wash 4-2
WIU 1-6
SUU 1-6
Griz 4-2
UNC 2-5
UI 2-4

Total 14-31

They finish with BBQU, Cats, UC Davis and PSU. Could this be an aberration and they go 1-3 the rest of the way?

A friend and I were having a similar talk the other day. Everyone is talking about how the Cats haven't played anyone but no one is mentioning how EWU hasn't played anyone either. The Griz are the only decent team they've beaten, just barely, and every week since the griz are making that look like not that great of a win.

You can only play who you play though. So there's always a chance that EWU is the best team in the country and they just haven't had to show that yet with the competition they've faced. But there's also always the chance that EWU looks a bit better than they are because they best team they've played all year has been UM.

For the griz, put up the records of the teams they have beat. Fbs teams they have beat have 0 FBS wins.

Washington (FBS) has beat two FBS teams (Arkansas State and Cal).

Yes and both those teams are 1-5 with no FBS wins.

Its not the toughest schedule in the world, but they did just beat Idaho by 50... I think EWU is for real. Not just for that reason, but they sure pass the eye test.

And the Griz schedule raises more questions. They might end up playing only three teams with a winning record this year - And they have already lost to two of them (EWU and Sac). The third game will be MSU.

The Griz wins this year are to:
UW - 2-6
West Ill - 1-6
Cal Poly - 1-5
Dixie State - 0-6

Total of 4-23.

Just trying to keep things in perspective. Weber keeps losing to playoff teams, but all the posters here are convinced that they are the FCS reincarnation of the ‘85 Bears or the steel curtain. Weber isn’t goid, Griz aren’t really good…we will find out if the Cats & Eagles are good over the next month.
