Tommy Mellott run

Post by AFCAT » Sat Oct 09, 2021 8:29 pm

It's funny watching this run. Near the end of the run, the DB starts flailing like he's running too fast down a hill and trying to catch his balance and then dives and falls on his face. The only other time I remember seeing that happen in a game was against SUU, I believe. Troy Andersen took off on a long TD run down the sidelines and a linebacker chasing him did the same arm windmilling move and then fell on his face. Speed kills.

Did Tommy run track? If so how did his times compare with Troy’s?

I didn't notice Tommy was in at QB, then when he broke the run open I thought it was TA at first. 16 looks a lot like 15 on a jersey... and both can run!

Mellott is getting quite a bit of play. Wildcat, wide receiver, kick off team. How is this for a tough team that the 4th string quarterback is often the first guy down the field on suicide squad?

Touchdown Tommy!

Andersen was faster, but Tommy never had a senior season of track.

I thought the same thing. They look kind of similar in their running.

If you squinted hard enough that 16 almost looked like a 15 running down the field.

I think the most impressive part is that from the moment Mellott ran on the field everyone in the stadium knew exactly what he was going to do, and then he did it anyway. I keep waiting for him to turn that into a pass play, maybe next week....

I don’t know the times, but Troy would win 10 out of 10 times. I wish Tommy played more on offense, but he isn’t close to Troy’s speed. I also wish they would let Tommy throw, because he can.

He made one mistake. He should’ve switched the ball to his right arm. But I suppose I can forgive him of that since he’s just a freshman. :D

Um I do believe he can and will throw, but if the run option is there, which it seems to be nearly everytime, he's goung to keep running.

My favorite part of this play was the Cal Poly defenders noticing Mellott back there and signaling to each other that a run was coming, then still getting gashed for an easy TD.

According to Athletic.net Troy's PR in the 100 was 10.89 and Tommy's was 11.25

In the 200, Troy was 22.42 and Tommy was 22.61.

Tommy wasn't top 10 in the 100 and was #10 in 2019, but he was #2 in the state in the 400.

(Note: Athletic.net is known to make mistakes, don't get on my case if those are incorrect)

Edit: #27 Connor Ryan ran a 10.90 in 2020...and if you saw his tackle in the 2nd half where he made a TFL thats not surprising.

In the 100m as Juniors:

TA - 11.05 (PR @ 10.88 as a Senior)
TM - 11.25 (PR)

Troy is all-world for us. But from strictly a speed standpoint, people aren’t paying attention if they don’t think Tommy could be as fast as Troy.

Wow....I had to rewatch that replay several times....Mellot is a gamer...he's going to rack up some serious stats in his career.

That’s what I was thinking. High school track times aside, he can’t be that much slower than Troy… he’s smoking pursuit angles out there.

100 and 200 times don't automatically translate to the field. The eye test has never failed me though. Troy has it. Travis Jonsen had it. Prukop and Shaun John had it too.

Mellott definitely has it... AND he can throw the rock. Make no mistake about it...DCs will need to account for Tommy or they will pay the price.
