Comparing top BSC Offenses

Post by Lord Vigo » Tue Oct 05, 2021 10:09 am

Now that the top teams have a few games under the belt, how do they stack up? I'm including MSU, UM, EW, UCD, and WEB because it's not worth my time to collect data on the scrubs. I'm only looking at FCS games.

Disclaimer-- it's early. Teams haven't all played the same quality of opponents. I'm not trying to draw hard and fast conclusions.

Rushing Yards per Game:
  • MSU: 233
  • UCD: 213
  • UM: 161
  • EW: 160
  • WEB: 158
Yards per Rush:
  • MSU: 5.3
  • UCD: 5.3
  • EW: 4.5
  • WEB: 4.0
  • UM: 4.0
Passing Yards per Game:
  • EW: 501
  • UM: 228
  • WEB: 216
  • UCD: 214
  • MSU: 212
Yards per Attempt:
  • EW: 11.4
  • MSU: 9.3
  • WEB: 7.1
  • UM: 7.0
  • UCD: 6.4
Points per Game:
  • EW: 57
  • MSU: 38
  • UCD: 35
  • UM: 32
  • WEB: 25
Giveaways:
  • MSU: 2
  • EW: 3
  • UCD: 8
  • UM: 10
  • WEB: 11
TFL Allowed per Game:
  • MSU: 4.0
  • UCD: 5.4
  • EW: 5.9
  • UM: 6.5
  • WEB: 6.5
*Updated through week 7

It would be just as interesting to see a comparison of defenses.
Earned turnovers
Tackles
Tackles for loss
Sacks
Interceptions
Passes defended
earned 3 and outs/punts
Defensive Scores

Makes me really happy to see MSU at #2 in pretty much every statistical category across both offense & defense.

This is the deepest, most balanced, best coached Cat team in the last 35 years.

One small criticism is that giving up multiple 15 yard personal fouls a game needs to be corrected.

UNCU was utter garbage on the field and the refs didn’t make them pay, so I do understand it, but just chill and let the coaches make their case. That said, titles aren’t won without some badass players who stand up for themselves.

Seattle to Billings to Missoula to Bozeman to Portland to Billings

What a ride

Agree 100%. And thats usually a sign of suspect coaching....that said, MSU is #16 in the country in fewest penalties per game at 4.4...and #34 in fewest penalty yards per game (#4 in the Big Sky) with 48.

When you think about the BS block in the back and questionable taunting penalties in Laramie, its actually pretty shocking.

But to your point, that means the average penalty on the cats is over 10 yards

Yes, that needs to get fixed in a hurry.

I think this sort of stuff is just helpful for context. Without more data, we can’t be conclusive about how good or bad anyone is, but it does help to look at what the Cats have done so far alongside other good teams.

I think Vigen's philosophy is emerging here-- exchange explosiveness for stability.

Certainly against terrible teams, they've made big plays and their YPA/YPC testify to that.

But generally speaking, they play it really safe. I have mixed feelings about that approach, but in so far as it can "work" it is certainly working.

Among the contenders in the conference, they're 1st in TFL's allowed (tied for 15th out of 123 in the FCS). Even more impressive, they've given up the ball twice in 7 games, which is the best of anyone in the entire FCS (let alone the conference).

When you're that good at protecting the ball and preventing negative plays, you're going to be difficult to beat.

Lord Vigo, are you going to continue these?

Obviously after this weekend, but this has been interesting to follow, especially the more and more games that are played.
