2021 Sagarin Rankings
I kept track of this throughout the 2019 season. I know it has plenty of haters, but I thought it was interesting to watch throughout the season and see where it all ends up again. I’m a numbers guy so I always find this stuff interesting.
The first few weeks of the season will have big jumps up and down, but by the end of the season last year, when it had as much data as possible, it wasn’t too far off from how it all shook out.
Cats are starting the season at 136th overall and 13th in the FCS.
Wyoming- 63rd overall
Drake- 240 overall, 110th FCS
San Diego-225 overall, 95th FCS
Big Sky (opponents in bold):
Montana- 117 overall, 6th FCS
Weber- 118 overall, 7th FCS
EWU- 129 overall, 11th FCS
Montana State-136 overall, 13th FCS
Sac St-144 overall, 21st FCS
UC Davis-149 overall, 26th FCS

It appears the winning a couple of games in the spring season helps a bunch in the rankings.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:12 pmI kept track of this throughout the 2019 season. Re: 2021 Sagarin Rankings
I think that’s exactly what it is actually. At the beginning of the season, my understanding is that this algorithm takes into account the most recent games, which was the spring season (or 2 games in one instance). So as the season progresses, it has more relevant data to pull from and in theory becomes more accurate and stable with less of the big jumps up and down each week.Long Time Cat wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:18 pmIt appears the winning a couple of games in the spring season helps a bunch in the rankings.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:12 pmI kept track of this throughout the 2019 season. Re: 2021 Sagarin Rankings
I know they’re all meaningless in their own way and there is no “authority” when it comes to rankings, but my understanding is that the Sagarin is based completely off of a computer algorithm they created.Hawks86 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:38 pmSagarin is included in the Massey composite https://masseyratings.com/cf/compare1aa.htm
While the Massey composite has various polls in it as well. So while it kind of evens itself out with all the different inputs they have, the Massey still has human bias in it vs an unbiased algorithm.
Kind of splitting hairs there on what’s “better”, but that’s why I had decided to look at Sagarin only back during last season, and I just decided to do the same thing this year.

Re: 2021 Sagarin Rankings
If you look at the points the algorithm gives each team, those top 5 BSC teams are bunched really closely. Probably splitting hairs at this point.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:26 pmI think that’s exactly what it is actually. Good point. Kinda like the SEC for FBS (with the exception of Vandy). Strong league from top to bottom and there are some real cellar dwellers in other conferences.Montanabob wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 10:11 amInteresting that the basement teams are still in the top half of the FCS.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 9:50 amAfter week 1, Cats are 126th overall and 11th in the FCS.

People have been saying this for a while...but the distance between the top 50 or so Power 5 teams & the rest of FCS is probably bigger than the difference between the G5/Bottom of the Power 5 & the top 15 or 20 FCS teams. Then theres another big drop to the rest of FCS.kennethnoisewater wrote: ↑Tue Sep 07, 2021 11:43 amGood point. Kinda like the SEC for FBS (with the exception of Vandy). We should do something like "relegation" in British Soccer: The Top 50 teams play a 9 game in conference & 3 game OOC schedule in the Power 5. Then the bottom 10 teams get relegated to a 75-90 School "Super G-5" Then you adjust teams accordingly.
Its kind of silly for us to still be playing the Drakes & ISUs at this point. And for 'Bama to be playing Vanderbilt.

I was just talking to someone about this (soccer relegation) for college football with someone on Monday. Have been a proponent of this for a long time. But it makes too much sense, and breaks up the historical conference concept so it will never happen.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 08, 2021 6:12 amI was just talking to someone about this (soccer relegation) for college football with someone on Monday. Yep. Kind a pipe dream. I mean, no big deal to have Texas, Mizzou, A&M & Oklahoma all get poached by the SEC. But we wouldn't want to break up long term history like Montana playing Southern Utah.kmax wrote: ↑Wed Sep 08, 2021 11:16 amHave been a proponent of this for a long time.
