Just trying to pass some time here. So most Cat fans will say Sonny Holland is No. 1 and most Griz fans will say Don Read is No. 1. I'm gonna have to agree with the Griz, but just barely. Read was 10-0, while Holland lost his first Cat-Griz game as a coach. Can't count his games as a player, so...
But what about No. 3. Is it Choate? I have to think so. Not only is he 4-0, but MSU was probably the underdog in every game. Definitely the first two. Fairly even in the last two, but Game 3 was in Missoula and Troy Andersen was out for Game 4.
Any other candidates? Hauck is just 5-4 and has probably suffered two of the worst (at least top 5) losses in Cat-Griz history. Kramer stopped the streak against Glenn, who would be a candidate were it not for that loss. Others? I'm sure Cat Grad will have someone in the skeleton closet to nominate. Just kidding CG.

It gonna be hard to beat going undefeated when you were the underdog every single time (and absolutely destroying the other team without your best player in the last one). Plus two consecutive nickname games.
Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

2. Jeff Choate (4-0, The Miracle in Missoula, The Beatdown in Bozeman)
3. Jim Sweeney (5-0)
4. Mike Kramer (broke the streak)
Griz:
1. Read (started the streak)
2. Dennehy (continued the streak)
3. Bobbi (nobody else has more than 3 wins)

Interesting discussion. It's all subjective and with that, my two favorite Cat coaches would be Jim and Sonny Holland. I truly love both of their families. Plus, they're both Butte America. What Montana used to be.

Sonny had the task of improving Coach Parac's 3-16 the previous two seasons before he was hired. His first season Sonny went 2-7-1, beating Portland State, Fresno State and tying Weber. The very next season he went 8-3. Beat North Dakota State, Boise State and the griz (21-3). I rate him a clear #2.
Don Read actually defies explanation. In his first stint at Portland State (DII) he went 20-19....4-5 his final season. But, somehow the very next year he got the job at the University of Oregon where he promptly tanked going 9-24. He's fired, heads for Oregon Tech going 21-15 in four years. He gets the job again at PSU in 1981 and in 4 years goes 2-9, 3-7, 8-3 then 4-5-1...19-33-1 overall. Done and done...not
To their ever lucky credit the griz noticed something. Read had opened up the 1985 season against the defending 1AA National Champion and number one Nationally ranked Montana State Bobcats on September 7 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Portland. He not only beat them, he outcoached them, out prepared them and out played them 46-28. I was there. I was . Then, on 9-24-85 he brought his DII Vikings to Missoula and beat the griz 21-16! PSU finished the 1985 season 4-5-1, 19-33 overall for Read. Then the griz rolled the dice.
