1988 Montana State University Bobcats football versus Boise State University in Bozeman

Post by AFCAT » Mon Apr 26, 2021 11:31 am

This is a fun game to watch for a couple of reasons. The year prior in Boise, the game was a blowout 35-13 Boise State victory over the Cats. Well, in 1988, payback is a bitch in Bozeman. The video was probably made by MSU since it's heavily edited with no commercials or other BS and is less than 45 minutes long. Oh, there is a Bobcat football record set in the game that still stands today. I know there are a lot of internet search engine geniuses/experts (just read any Covid or trans kid thread) in Bobcat Nation but without using internet help and just watching the game, try and figure out what that still standing record is. This game was also described in newspapers as the most humiliating loss in Boise State history up to that time.

Just a wild guess - longest interception return for a TD?

That was awesome.

Can’t decide what was worse; Boise’s offense or their special teams?

Couple things I loved. Almost no penalties. Just let the guys play. And the 20+ guy dogpile after the huge interception for the score. That was great.

We beat Boise State and Eastern Washington that season...and still went 4-7.

1988. What a year! I remember being at this game and the INT return by Pouliot was electric. Good times. I worked at the Rocking R after the game and it was buzzing that night. I believe this game was Homecoming. If so, I rode on the R Bar float in a Bobcat uniform with a Ronald Reagan head. Played catch with the folks along the parade route. Things got even better as the night wore on... :D

We were 4-4 in conference though, which was pretty good after going 0-8/1-10 the year before. I believe we started out 4-1 in BSC play, then lost the final 3 games. Sadly, that 1988 season was pretty much the high point of Earle's 5 year run at MSU.

I have only watched a few minutes but, it might be most blocked kicks in a game at this pace.

We were living in the Portland area at the time, pre-interweb. Don't remember this beat-down. Thanks for posting.

I have to admit that I really liked watching those counter trap runs up the middle.

I can't tell because of the helmets but I'm pretty sure our hair was on fire.

So cool to see a game from back then!

The only problem with the video is that they were afraid to show a young Thunder Cat putting on an absolute clinic behind the bleachers 😂

Not according to Thundercat. He was behind the bleachers putting on a show with his football skills.
