Arguably, McGhee has had the better MSU career. I don’t see Andersen’s number being retired.
It’s only fair to compare full careers of players. Need to wait until next year before we can accurately have this debate (McGhee vs TA).
For example- If TA is the buck winner this year and the cats take home a National championship.... the McGhee vs TA debate looks a lot different.

Troy has been All Big Sky for 3 years now....do I have that right? In 3 different positions. Pretty good argument for retiring if he gets a 4th Big Sky recognition and as noted above earns a Buchanan or All-American award. How many other Bobcats have been recognized for four consecutive years by the Big Sky?

He made an awesome play vs NDSU. Well deserved.
Glad that it isn’t Andersen. The #15 and he are synonymous.
I can’t picture anyone else wearing that number again.
Obviously, you can't have two #15s on defense in the same game, so this will have to change, but I can see him wearing the number in the future.
Brody could be the next phenom. Montana ranch kid, sort of under the radar, big upside. I’m eager to see him. Probably a good candidate to wear the #15. Troy has really put a special value on that number — so I’d like to see it given out rather than requested.

Statistically, you can argue McGhee has had a better college career than any of the players with retired numbers. He’s the best quarterback I’ve ever seen play here. I’d love to see #9 retired for him. He was a major factor in fully rejuvenating the football program and the end zone project. He was also a very good assistant coach. A future candidate for the head coaching position I predict.
I’m guessing that Andersen will have his number retired barring some kind of misfortune. I can’t think of any other reason to have him continue to wear #15. IMO it would taint having any retired numbers as I feel there’s never been a player anything like him at MSU.
MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Better add Sam McCullom to great MSU players, long career in NFL with Minnesota and Seattle. He may have played with Bill Kollar.

We can’t have a discussion about retiring numbers without Kane Ioane’s name being front and center.

And that's where this conversation always goes for every football program. Ioane, Lulay, McGhee, Andersen--all in the last 20 years. You could probably make an argument for 30 or so all time greats with hopefully plenty more to go. I think there are other ways to honor players without retiring numbers.

Should probably start a separate thread. Until then, Andersen is simply the best football player in the last half-century at MSU. I have a very strong opinion on that, but everyone else is entitled to their's. McGhee was another pretty special player, but certainly not the same, and after that there's a drop off. JMHO. No player in the past fifty years, sans Kollar, has attracted so much attention from NFL scouts, has made the plays that he has made, or tore up UM like he has (5 TDs in two games).
