Travis Jonsen is Super Bowl bound

Post by iaafan » Mon Jan 25, 2021 10:35 am

He's a Tampa Bay practice squad member and, barring something drastic, probably won't play in the game. Pretty cool nonetheless.

Do practice squad members get bonuses based on playoff wins/Super Bowl wins?

Super cool for him. Would love if he could see the field next year somewhere

That's a good question, I have no idea.

I do think he's doing exactly what he needs to do to make a roster someday. He's a late bloomer as a WR so any experience he gets is really valuable. I could see him being a guy who has a nice run starting when he's about 26 years old. Hope he can hold out that long.

According to a CBS article.

"Practice squad players don't receive playoff money but continue to get a paid salary (minimum of $8,000 per week) during the weeks their respective teams are in the playoffs. ... This is to discourage leaving for another team's 53-man roster when the opportunity arises. Jan 3, 2020"

Well that's enough money to stick around for a few years. If preseason to the super bowl is over 6 months, that's maybe 27 weeks. Even at the minimum that's $216,000 a year. That's pretty close to the league maximum in the CFL.

More importantly - does he get an NFC Championship ring and will he get a Super Bowl ring if they win?

Thanks! I could think of a lot worse ways to get paid $8,000.00 a week. Plus he is learning/around some very talented wr, really hope he gets a shot for an active roster. Love seeing a skill position from MSU play in the NFL.

It sucks. Because I won't be cheering for the Bucs. Because, well, Tom Brady....lol

I'm ecstatic for him that he gets to learn from the people on that team. The head coach. The offensive coordinator. Even TB12.

No bonus, but they get rings if they win and when Tampa won when in 2003 the practice squad players got rings. Same ownership so I’d guess the same would apply.

Travis has a great shot because of his special teams.

No argument about Brady. I know everyone has strong feelings on him but kind of unbelievable how he is back in the mix. A lot of people acted like Belichek’s brilliance got Brady where he is but hard to look at this year and buy that story.

Well its because Bellichek taught Brady everything he knows....

So happy for Travis to have this experience. Great person, and he literally did everything asked of him during his time here at MSU. The ideal team player. I have no doubt we will see him on the field next season.

NFL players, practice squad or not, only get paid in the season. That's why they call them game checks. So a practice squad player gets paid each week while his team is active.

That's what is so crazy about some of these QB contracts...When Patrick Mahomes' new contract kicks in he'll be getting 2,941,176...per game check.

Guys do get roster bonuses etc. There's also a weekly stipend when you're in training camp as a player who's trying to make the practice squad like Jonsen was.

Just realized we had back to back years of bobcats in the Super Bowl. Granted mike person was starting for 49ers in the game last year, and TJ is practice squad... still, this is very cool!
