MSU S&C coach is moving back to Iowa.

Bad time to lose a S&C coach.

That is frustrating to hear. I always liked Alex. He did a great job. I wish him success.

Question for those of you who know far more about the personnel and structure of the staff. Was he head of strength conditioning for more sports than football and did he have any assistants that have been with him here awhile and have shown good promise that would be good candidates to move up to his position? I certainly don't hear everything but have only heard good things about his work here. I hope we can replace him and not lose too much of the gains he has brought to the program. Good luck Alex in your next chapter.

That would be a great hire. But there is little chance of it happening.

Dane would be the perfect fit but I think he has a good thing going and this is an 80 hour a week job.

He’d be taking a pay cut, work more hours, and not be working for himself.

So, I doubt it.

If there is any coaching position other than HC that you absolutely have to get right, it’s this one. You cannot have a good team without a good S&C coach.

What does a S&C coach make at this level make? I heard they hardly make any $ which is sad since they are such an integral part of the program.

I use to intern under him and I can tell you that he was the Head S&C for both football and volleyball and every assistants under him also coached 2-3 sports. But he still oversaw everything that went into the S&C program, from the equipment, his staff, and what exactly each program they were coming up with for the different athletes.

I believe depending at the school determines what an FCS S&C coach makes, but I want to say that ours here were making between $25-35k/year.

Holy cow. De facto minimum wage in Bozeman is $13 or $14/hr. So 26k/yr.

If those wages are true, MSU is really doing a disservice to its athletic department.

Even though MSU salaries are public information, they are no longer directly accessible to the public — one must file a request. Good luck with that. Over the last years MSU/BOR have pretty much swept them away, including in the Board of Regent’s Agenda. (You can read this on the Renne Library web site). The MSU salaries used to be kept in the Library in printed form. In keeping with state law, the State of Montana publishes theirs on the State web site. I’m surprised the university has not been sued.

The assistant’s position that was advertised by Alex in the summer of 2019 had a salary of $50,000. There is typically a significant gap between assistant and head positions.

He was making over $35,000 a year.

Best of luck to Coach Wilcox. He did a great here and I’m sure his replacement will as well. Go Cars!

Tough to lose a key person such as Alex. I wish him well. I would think we'll get some terrific candidates to replace him considering the success of the program and soon to be completed BAC. A top notch facility such as the BAC will make this a plum job.

Really tough time for the athletic dep't/school/regents to give him the raise that he deserved.

I'm not trying to say that Alex is replaceable because he's not not but didn't we just get a very highly respected S&C coach to come work for us in the past couple of years? If I remember correctly, wasn't he the head S&C coach at a fairly prestigious (for football) school for a very long time and moved here to be closer to family?

A lot of speculation on why he left but nobody has a reason why. May not have been money may have been. May have been something else maybe he wanted to change in his life. I wish him the best and I hope we get a good replacement
