Heck, that is pretty sad. Kevin Thompson, had he stayed at Sac could have had a tenth year of eligibility.
Actually he could come back next year but he decided to retire.

Thanks for sharing! I have a really stupid question here, hoping somebody can boil it down for me so a 4th grader can understand. So for any teams playing the Spring season, I know the players that were going to be Seniors heading into 2020 are allowed to play this Season, but then are they also able to play in 2021? I guess what I'm saying, are the FCS teams that opted to NOT play a Spring season in the same boat in terms of player eligibility?
Every single player is given a free pass this year, they can play the spring and still play the fall or choose to sit out and still play the fall. Nothing counts against eligibility. This season is an absolute freebie.
So, now we get a taste of what it's like to be like SUU and Weber! Old guys playing...younger guys... 8)

Is anyone in any numbers following FCS spring football? I haven’t heard a thing about it on any national sports shows.
I've been watching and following pretty closely. What do you want to know?
It’s iust weird seeing SFA at 6-4 while fellow conference member NW St. is 0-1.

It’s a not real season to me.

I think the only real national coverage is Deion Sanders at Jackson State. I thought there might be a bit more of a spotlight on FCS football, but I don't think that's really transpired.

I know the Athletic said they were going to devote more coverage to it, but I don't have a subscription so I can't verify.

Makes sense.

I got to admit, even I forget they're teams playing right now! #-o

Yeah it's definitely odd. SFA chose to play a fall schedule instead of spring. As did UCA and Abilene from the Southland. All teams have their fall games considered for the playoffs as well. Right now UND looks like the beat team in the FCS in my opinion. They have a stout D and a high powered offense. If they limit turnovers they'll be really hard to beat.

How weird would that be to finish your season in November and have your first playoff game in April. I assume that could happen?

It could. And yeah that would be really crazy. Not easy to be as prepared as a team that has been playing for 6+ weeks. I don't think anyone who played a fall only schedule will be in though. Jacksonville state is sitting at 5-1overall, but they are 2-0 in spring with an FBS win in the fall. They played 4 fall games and they're playing 7 conference games in the OVC. After them SFA has the best record of them all at 6-4. They won 4 D II games though so no way they would get in. NDSUs win against UCA in the fall will help them as UCA was "ranked" at the time. Just weird all around with some of the fall stuff carrying over.

I subscribe to the Athletic but haven't noticed any more coverage. I just looked on their CFB section and of the 40 headlines, one of them is about the FCS. Maybe 2.5% of the coverage is more than normal, I don't know.

Illinois State opted out of the rest of the spring due to injuries. They don't want to jeopardize the fall season. Gotta wonder if more teams that won't be making the playoffs will do this.

About 10 more opt outs this week. Most of the CAA is out, Wofford, Western Illinois and the list goes on. Another thing I think is just adding to the dumbness of the spring season is the NCAA announcing today they have predetermined host sites for the playoffs.

Newark, Delaware – Delaware
Cheney, Washington – Eastern Washington
Jacksonville, Alabama – Jacksonville State
Harrisonburg, Virginia – James Madison
Kennesaw, Georgia – Kennesaw State
Orono, Maine – Maine
Springfield, Missouri – Missouri State
Murray, Kentucky – Murray State
Grand Forks, North Dakota – North Dakota
Fargo, North Dakota – North Dakota State
Huntsville, Texas – Sam Houston
Brookings, South Dakota – South Dakota State
Villanova, Pennsylvania – Villanova
Ogden, Utah – Weber State

Some of those teams won't even make the playoffs and 2 random teams will be playing in their stadium.

And some of them probably don't draw many fans, even when their own team is playing. let alone when two other teams are playing in their home stadium.

Just curious, but do any of those teams that opted out have winning records?

Only a couple. Chattanooga opted out a few weeks ago at 3-2. URI is 2-1. New Hampshire opted out after 1 game and a bunch of canceled games. Most of the programs have cited injuries and covid issues, which have dropped their numbers well below the scholarship players threshold to play each week.

It is interesting... the cynic in me questions if they would have opted out if they had winning seasons. But then again, maybe their losing records are a direct result of their struggles with Covid and injuries. Hard to say.
