I like the idea of playing a couple small Montana colleges, not named UM ;-), better than a spring scrimmage. MSU can play lots of players to minimize the risk of injury but still have a real game. I coached basketball for 11 years. Players practice different and play different for a real game.
Except, at this point anyway, the Frontier Conference is still planning a spring season. You can't expect any of them to ditch scheduled games, conference or otherwise, to play body bag games against the two universities.
MSU plays Western on April 17th.
Do you have details on this yet? At MSU? At Western? Will my tailgate spot be plowed so I can come tailgate, even if I can't get into the game? :D
Seriously....love to know if there are details yet.

I don't understand the desire to play the griz in a game that doesn't count. There's no upside. If the coaches want the players to get some real game time against a D1 team they should call up UND or one of the BSC schools we aren't playing in the fall.
Assuming your post was in response to mine, of course a freshman only exhibition doesn’t count in a record book. It counts in giving some young players, many of which haven’t played a game in 2+ years, some game like experience against somebody other than themselves. As far as it being against the Grizzly freshman, their players are of a similar skill level and are the closest school to us geographically. In this time, money isn’t growing on trees and putting 30 or 40 players on a bus to Butte for a day seems very cost effective to me. I don’t understand what is so sacrilegious about letting some freshman from across the divide play each other.
You were just one of many people I was responding to. I just think that the Cat/griz rivalry is on a different level of competition that we shouldn't tarnish with one-off games that don't count. It wouldn't cost that much more to involve EWU/ISU/UI/UND. I'm all for playing a game but just against someone else. If we played the griz the losing team would be ridiculed for losing and the winning team would be ridiculed for taking pride in winning a meaningless game. That would only happen if the griz are the opponent.

Ultimately it's pointless to argue over this since it's not going to happen. Just wanted to explain my perspective against playing the griz since some people disagree.

It's -4 currently in Bozeman and by Friday the low temp is -21. The first game would've been 18 days from now. In case you were on the fence about whether MSU should've been playing a spring season, hopefully you're not anymore!

I still cannot believe that native Montanans thought it was a good idea!

I wonder if MSU has been able to find any opponents for the spring?

Even with a new coach I am still in support of playing a couple spring games against NAIA or D2. A big improvement over the traditional spring game. Nothing like testing your athletes in a real game. IMHO

Might have recruits there for this. NCAA dead period is scheduled to be lifted on 4/15.

Not necessarily Bobcat related but Tarleton State is tied 10-10 with McNeese at the half. They're outgaining Mcneese as well. 2 fumbles have hurt them but a pretty solid start in game 1 as a FCS school.

Just saw on The Athletic that the NCAA is expected to extend that dead period to May 31. Wonder if that's so FCS schools can't get recruits to games. Don't know if that was ever a factor in scheduling any spring "games".

The dark pinkers just added another game against Portland State.

Yep, wondering if there is any news on Spring schedule? Seems like it would be a missed opportunity if we don’t take advantage of the extra practice time by scheduling at least one game. With the new staff, schemes, roster changes, etc. it makes sense.

I think priority is getting good practices on clear fields to implement any new schemes. If that includes games that Coach feels can benefit us I support it. But if it rushes the process and puts changes on film for next falls opponents may not be a benefit.

It's hard to believe a super-scrimage against one of the Frontier teams that dropped out of their spring season wouldn't benefit both teams heading into the fall. It's been a long time since these guys have hit someone they didn't share a locker room with.

I think they need the additional practice and countable hours that come along with scheduling 2 games.

It is official. UM vs Portland State in Missoula on Apr 17. I really hope that MSU adds a spring game against an NAIA opponent. No need to play an FCS team, but a great opportunity to get some love reps for our kids.
