Re: NCAA Decision on Fall Championships
Your Covid death rate for people in their 20’s includes people of all types of health (general population). I think it is fair to assume that the health and fitness of a football player is much better than the general population. To have an accurate estimate of the potential Covid death rate for football players, you need to compare groups that are similar on both age AND health. Given that most Covid deaths are with immuno-suppressed individuals and that very few football players are immuno-suppressed, there is a good possibility that the most Covid resistant demographic are 18 to 22 year old athletes.MSU01 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 11:19 amFair enough, if players are given the choice to opt out and if we respect the players' decisions who do decide not to play, that works for me. But having read some social media comments lately, I think there are plenty of people who will not be respectful of those who opt out and that puts players in a pretty tough situation.ilovethecats wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 11:07 amI don't think it's a cavalier attitude at all. We're talking about football, possibly the riskiest, most dangerous sport there is. Do you think a player is more likely to die from Covid, or any other way on a football field. If you had to lay your money down on Covid or the "field" if you will...what would you take? I know what I'd take.MSU01 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 10:59 amCovid death rates for healthy college-age people are very, very low - but they aren't zero. It's very easy for us to sit here and tell the teams to get out there and play and that it'll all be fine, but what if a player or coach gets Covid while traveling to a road game and is one of the unlucky few who does die from it despite being in a low risk group? I'm not sure what the right answer here is, but the way people seem to be just assuming that everyone will be fine is rather cavalier to me and does not take into account that there IS a risk of severe illness and/or death involved for anyone who gets Covid regardless of age or health status.
I'm not suggesting every single athlete wants to play. Some very well may not. If they put it to a vote and the majority said they were too fearful to play, I'd respect that. Based on what I know about this football team, the coaches and administration, my feeling is the vast majority want to play. But like I said, I always back the players so if all of them or most of them don't want to play...don't play.
It seems silly to me that in a brutal game like football, we're suggesting the risks of this virus may be too much for the players to overcome.
2017 data shows there were 13 football related deaths that year out of 4 million players, which is a 0.0003% death rate. The Covid death rate for people in their 20s is currently estimated at around 0.1%, still low but 300 times higher than the football-related death rate.

Unfortunately I trust the griz fan over some writer from the Athletic. We'll see who has the better source.

If the ADs voted not to play in the Fall, I find it very hard to believe they'll be overruled by the Presidents.

Spring football is the stupidest idea ever. Either play in the fall or don't play at all. Having 2 season within 6-8 months for a sport this physical is moronic.

My people!
Of course, we'll probably have like 30 cases, and like 5 people in the hospital throughout the state so it won't be safe for fans then anyway...
