Ahem.

Scientifically, there's no way players can put that much good weight on in that short of a time frame.

And this ends your regular occurring Gary rant.

Does Zambrano transition to safety at his size?
Not sure. I thought the same thing though. Getting Jeffrey Manning and Chacho Ulloa as transfers bolstered the position and the hope is that they will be fighting for starting spots with Ty Okada. But I know they still really like Ty in the slot against certain opponents so Kane still definitely wants three safeties who can start and/or be on the field at the same time like last year. They still have Luke May in the mix as a veteran presence/special team ace, James Campbell has moved over from WR, and they really like what they've seen in Rylan Ortt's development. The rest of the safety room gets rounded out by Rfr. John Knight (who transitioned over from QB), Fr. Connor Ryan, and Fr. Jake D'Agistino (who I think will eventually become an OLB).

The starting corners are Tyrel Thomas and Greg Filer but Zambrano may be the third guy on the depth chart. Might be needed more on the outside too.
Where is Level Price Jr. on the depth chart? I saw him playing quite a bit last season.
Here is how I rank the corners on the roster:

1.) Tyrel Thomas (Senior)
2.) Greg Filer III (Senior)
3.) Eric Zambrano (Sophomore)
4.) Level Price Jr. (Sophomore)
5.) Tyler Bohannon (Redshirt Freshman)
6.) Kendric Bailey (Sophomore)
7.) Max Lenzy (Greyshirt Freshman)
8.) Miles Jackson (True Freshman)
9.) Devin Davis (True Freshman)

Throw in the fact Ty Okada will play a bunch of nickel and we have a solid 5. As usual with corners in the Big Sky, young corners are going to get an opportunity to contribute early.
I take it this is the fall roster. I notice a lot of people missing.

Good list Vim. It’s got some shaking out to do, but here’s how safety looks to me:
1. Manning
2. Okada
3. Ulloa
4. Campbell
5. May
6. Knight
7. Ryan, Ortt, D’Agostino

Some sleepers in there. I really love watching Campbell on special teams. Perhaps the most interesting group this year.

Unsure on Tommy Campbell (freshman from Columbus). Two true freshman coming off senior year injuries were Max Lenzy and Jaelen Renning so they are likely grey shirting (won't be on the roster until next spring). I'm you are referring to Naquen Parker? He's #10 on the current roster. Jalen Cole likely won't be able to play again if he didn't make it back for this year. The goal last fall was for him to rest and see how he rehabbed with his neck. Fall 2020 was the goal date. But who knows anything at this point because of the fluidity of COVID-19 and college football.

Interesting year to gray shirt since literally everyone is now a gray shirt (it's just some get to be on scholarship).

You sure? Are you considering half of these guys are teenagers?

I came in my first summer as a RFr at 6'1" and 173 lbs, had never seriously been part of a weight program in HS (Butte High), was still growing at 17 yo. Rocky Gullickson running the weight room - completely changed my nutrition, workouts, etc. I checked out of spring ball that school year at 6'2" and 198lbs, no juice whatsoever (same year others were 'roiding up prior to the ban), I went from 14% body fat to 9% (before BMI), gained vertical (31 to 36), no loss of speed. I know I gained 25 lbs of good weight in one school year (July to May). I also grew over 1" and my shirt sleeve length went from 33" to 36". I think the wild card is 'are you still growing' at 17, 18, 19 years old? What's your starting point? My roomie (Mark Reinhart, one of the best pure athletes I've ever seen in my life) came in at 5'10" 170ish lbs, and stayed almost exactly the same - but he came in benching near 300lbs, had been a freak lifter for 5-6 years prior.

All to say, it is possible for teenagers to gain significant good weight in a short time (9-10-11 months), say 0.5-1% body weight/week avg, especially when their frame is still expanding - not saying all gains shown here are good weight. I think I could agree with you with the qualifier that plateau'd adults can't gain that much good weight in a years time.

Ahem.

Scientifically, there's no way players can put that much good weight on in that short of a time frame.

And this ends your regular occurring Gary rant.

I completely agree with you!

I'm just poking fun at a certain poster here.

All in good fun!

I think there might be another factor in this too. I think it’s very possible that “actual” weights might not be accurately listed from time to time. I think there may be some fat fingering of the keypad sometimes and gee it’s really not critical to be 110% accurate. But also jdoub is right to point out that there is some structural changes going on in an 17-19yr olds body that can accommodate those big gains.

Who do you see missing?
T. Campbell, Lenzy, Renning, Parker and Cole.

When BJ first got to MSU I said some pretty bad things about him, and I will be the first person to admit, I was wrong and way off base. BJ gets what it means to play at MSU, he understands how to recruit MSU, and above and beyond he has the best interest of his players. I mean, how many special teams coach recognize birthdays and accomplishments like BJ?

I was wrong by a long shot, and I appreciate him and what he does for MSU as a whole.

Both are slated to graduate this fall. We have very talented (but unproven) depth so I'm excited to see what guys like Joe McElroy, Dylan Porter, TJ Session, Holden Sampson, Jacob Kettels, Cole Sain, and Jack Harlow have to offer. It will be a fun battle for those 5th to 8th best lineman spots. This was that natural attrition Choate was talking about with this weird year. Schooling is on a different timeline than football eligibility at the moment.
