Changes in media coverage

Well this is interesting. I think Welsch is a bit naive in thinking this will magically even things up, but it will probably help. I applaud the effort.

There will be, but it'll never be perfect. I talked to the editor of the Missoulian this fall (not a sports writer), and he said multiple Griz fans cancelled their subscriptions this year because UM just had articles in it about the Bobcats. I think we all have a little bit of an inferiority complex that makes us jealous enough to perceive that we're getting hosed. I think this will really level things out quite a bit.

:penalty: If there was a puking emoji I would use that. Greg did a fantastic job covering the Cats and Jeff is... I'm not even sure what word to use #-o

Going to start a protest in front of the Chronicle to hire Colter_Nuanez back, who's joining?

Ha!
I'd join if Colter actually wanted to go back there, I doubt he does.

Haha, Welsh thinks people are claiming conspiracies when they are just trying to get him to understand the business of selling papers.

I’ll gladly pay for Colter and Brooks!

I think Colton Pool and Paul Schwedelson do a pretty good job from the comical.

Agreed. And I would guess this doesn't mean that Jeff starts writing more about the Bobcats--if anything it means Lee will be doing less with the Bobcats and "borrowing" the coverage from the BDC. Jeff will probably write a little more about the Cats than he currently does but I'd guess not much.

Oh definitely. This change means absolutely no "extra" coverage for MSU. Lee is just borrowing from the Chronicle and we have no one from Lee dedicated to the Bobcats, in addition to the Chronicle.

Probably less coverage, since we're losing Rachac. Which is a bummer, bc Greg does a better job than Colton and Schweddyballs.

It’s a good move for everyone unless you subscribe to the Chronicle in which case it makes little difference.

This allows anyone laying out pages at the Missoulian, IR, Standard or Gazette to get MSU content off the wire. Not many would go to the MSU website to get game stories or previews, etc. It will be available in hard copy or online.

Picking up those newspapers won’t be filled with the dread of knowing that the sports pages will only have UM coverage.

I’ve been complaining about this since the 1980s. It’s part of the reason I became a sportswriter. I was biased against the bias.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

So since 406 sports is free, it means no need to pay a Chronicle subscription to get Cat sports.

That was one of my big takeaways too, but the Chronicle knows how many people subscribe just for Bobcat stuff. I'd guess there will be some exclusive subscriber-only content that we still won't get on 406 sports. I hope I'm wrong, but I see this coming out as a net loss for fans seeing coverage of MSU Football. No more dedicated writer from Lee, and the same amount of coverage from the Chronicle (or possibly less for non-subscribers). For me as a non Chronicle subscriber, I'll get more access to Colton and Paul's stuff, but I'll lose Greg's. I get most of mine from Skyline, so I don't see it as too much of a change for me.

Open up the Chronicles stuff in an incognito tab.
