The amount he's improved from his freshman year to now is absolutely astounding.
Its always too bad when a player uses his true freshman year due to depth/talent issues within their respective position groups. A true freshman should never have to come in and START on the offensive or defensive line in their first year. Offensive and defensive lineman usually need that first year to set their development schedule to add weight, strength, and technique to compete at this level of football. Derek bypassed that in 2016 because he was intelligent and strong enough to make an impact on a depleted defensive line for MSU. I mean by the end of that year we were starting Derek and freshman Woody Brandom at DE for periods of time to make it all work. Unreal. Anyway, I appreciate the standard Derek has set for the program in years to come...but I would've loved to see what he could do with one more year.
wow... I forgot that he never redshirted...……… another great example of why they should try to redshirt every true freshman at damn near all costs. There are always going to be exceptions- like Ifanse, who deserve to be starters as true freshman... but 99% of the time its best to find a way to redshirt that first year.

I understand that marks played because of depth issues... so yeah, I get that... But man, if he were coming back next year as a 5th year senior... holy cow.

Yeah...due to MSU's complete lack of defensive line depth, Derek had to play.

Just can't stop watching this. Over and over and over and over and over (takes breath) and over and over and over and over....

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

A little bit off topic, but does anyone remember the play where I believe #53 the Austin Peay OL came in late and did a WWF (really) late hit on the pile, was it Marks that he hit?

I remember that late hit. I thought it was classic stupid in that he piled on while Marks? was laying on top of an AP receiver's legs. The AP guy took the brunt of that stupidity.

It was their right guard, #63, with a late hit on Konkol. I remember it because the TV crew was talking about having no idea what the flag was for and I was thinking "did you guys completely miss the obvious late hit?"

This is correct. Offensive guard with red hair.
#63 Right guard Williams jumps on Konkol after the whistle with 4:25 to go in the 4th. Pretty malicious intent more evident from the east view.

That's right #63 and I remember the red hair,....ESPN3 and the Refs must have been working together, conspiracy theory! #ESPNGATE2019

Yeah AP's #63 must have been kind of a cheap shot un-sportsmanship specialist. I don't' think it showed very much on the broadcast but at the 13:25 mark in the 4th quarter on their long touchdown pass play he really outdid himself. Our #14 Ty Okada was rushing the passer Their #5 and #63 blocked him away and #63 eventually took him down. That's when the camera shot leaves them so you don't see how long #63 flopped all over Okada. With the play having moved down field all officials eyes were looking down field. It's too bad he didn't get caught and flagged for his crap. I'm not sure how the rule goes but it would have served him right if he had cost his team that touchdown. Does anyone else who was in the stadium remember that play?

Is that the play Okada got hurt and went out of the game? After thinking about, he got hurt down field on a pass play, I think, AP was heading into the west/north endzone.

I watched the Furman game and 63 had several pretty egregious late hits. Even the announcers were mentioning how he had a history of that.

Yeah and the referee was paying no attention until the guy was getting off Okada. I do not envy Weber and JMU getting that sh*t crew. The pass to Jonsen in the 2nd half where Rovig passed to our sideline going towards the N EZ was a microcosm of the game as a whole for the refs. The defender pushed Jonsen OB at about 8 yards- missed illegal contact. Jonsen was fighting back trying to get back in bounds and the defender had his hand inside Jonsen's facemask shoving his head back - missed illegal use of hands to the face. And to top it off he was still mugging him when the pass was thrown and PI was missed.
