On to Southern Utah

Thunderbirds put up 59 against ISU. What do the Cats need to do to get the W and get back on track to finish this season strong?

As I said in another thread, I'm still pretty confident our d will hold them to half of that or less. We just need to figure out who we want to be on offense and get er done!

There is almost no criticism to be leveled against Ioane and the D—which it seems like we all mostly agree on—the offense has to be figured out.

Somebody mentioned “hopelessly optimistic fans” in a different thread. I don’t think I’ve been hopelessly optimistic, but I have put unbridled faith in Choate and bristled when people went nuts after the Sac State loss...

I can’t defend yesterday. The offense is a mess. It MUST get sorted out this week. I think going back to Troy would be a disaster when looking at the big picture...in no small part because I think he has less than ZERO interest in playing that position again and he’s clearly playing injured...but they may need to run Troy’s offense with Johnson starting at QB for the balance of the season...or something. I dunno. Blah.

Not sure what the hell is going on, but to answer the question, they need to figure out the offense.

We need to loosen or remove the limitations on the offense and let them play. Also need to give the OL and RBs the tools to handle stunts and blitzes.

While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Choate needs to take the headset off when we’re on offense

He may just benefit from listening to people that know a lot more about offensive football than he does.

No he won’t resist the temptation to say, “Scratch your play Matt, just have Jonsen run it straight ahead.”

Are you sure its Choate calling that play? I doubt that it is.

Southern Utah - #1 pass defense in the Big Sky; #13 rush defense in the Big Sky

Now that is an intriguing spectrum for the current Bobcat offense.

I’m not sure if I’m encouraged by this or not. I knew Choate would be accountable. However, it sounds like they’re sticking with the status quo personnel-wise. That shouldn’t be a problem the next two weeks, but I can’t see it going far over the remainder of the season.

They will play the Cats like everyone else has. Put 8-9 in the box (blitz/stunt) and make the QB beat them.

Tom, I'm with you. But is there a personnel change that you would like to see?

I have absolutely no idea, but why should that stop me from making a smart-a$$ comment-it was "Beat Up Choate Day" afteterall.
I do think some head coaches micro-manage things too much and they would help their team by not wearing a headset and letting their coordinators call the plays with little interference. I have no idea if Choate does that or not. It sure would be interesting to listen in wouldn't it?

Thanks for asking. Yes, there is.

I'd like to see Jonsen take over at QB. We have two QBs that haven't shown much in terms of running or passing or scrambling. He might not be able to pass all that well, but at least Jonsen can run and scramble. He's an extra threat of some sort in the backfield. He can line up in the diamond, run his two plays, take a straight drop and if no one is wide open has the potential to go all Chis Murray and house it from almost anywhere on the field.

I think the players would have more confidence in him.

Rovig and Bauman can't keep defenses honest, so when they're in everyone knows they're either handing it off (not keeping it) or passing, which other defenses love thanks to their 50% completion rate and low average per attempt.

I wouldn't play Ifanse or Andersen until the Davis game in hopes of getting them healthier. Put Jonsen at QB with Andersen, Ifanse and Jones in the backfield. Throw Hosey, Sumner and Perry in there once in a while, too, to give Troy a break.

We averaged 40 points/game, 449 yards/game during our 5-game winning streak. We've averaged 16.5 points, 359 yards in the two losses. What's different? Our yardage production is not off that much. Yet our points are down catastrophically. Is it our injury-riddled running back corps? I tried to sift through stats and pick up some kind of trend but I'm just not that smart. Anybody?
